    Wayne State University is searching for an experiencedAcademic Advisor I/II, Irvin D. Reid Honors Collegeat its Detroit campus location.

    Position Purpose:

    Wayne State University is searching for an experienced Academic Advisor I/II, Irvin D. Reid Honors College at its Detroit campus location. This position is funded through one-time (non-recurring) funds and is contingent upon continued funding availability. Renewal may be possible but is not guaranteed.

    Essential functions:

    Communicate effectively and accurately academic and non-academic requirements, policies, procedures within the University and Irvin D. Reid Honors College.

     

    Maintain continuous advising relationships with students; effectively engage students in broad discussion from initial program preparedness through career planning; monitor and communicate using university systems, social media, small group, and face-to-face sessions, as appropriate.

     

    Coordinate recruitment and retention efforts within the Irvin D. Reid Honors College.

     

    Work with supervisors and in consultation with experienced advisors, work with minimal supervision.

     

    Demonstrate ability to act as liaison with other units; participate in meetings and work as a member of a team.

     

    Provide a comprehensive suite of advising services; advise potential and current students on admission, registration, and graduation requirements.

     

    Conduct information sessions and provide academic advising on main campus, off campus, and virtually, as requested.

     

    Assist in the College’s recruiting efforts, represent at events, college fairs and/or additional recruiting events; coordinate special programs.

     

    Ability to prepare and update Honors plans of work.

     

    Verify requirements for graduation.

     

    Must be available to work evenings and weekend hours, as requested.

     

    Must be available to work hybrid schedule, as necessary

     

    Must have own transportation.

     

    Continuously develop knowledge of best practices, policies, procedures, technological tools, etc.

     

    Facilitate student orientation and information sessions.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Qualifications for Academic Advisor I Rank:

    Minimum: Bachelor's Degree in education, counseling, or related field.

    Qualifications for Academic Advisor II Rank:

    Minimum: Master's Degree in education, counseling, or related field.

     

    Experience: Minimum 3 years of job-related experience as an academic advisor required.

    Qualifications for Academic Advisor I & II Ranks:

    Advising experience at a university or community college working with a diverse student body.

     

    Experience in higher education student services preferred (admissions, housing, advising, learning communities, etc.).

     

    Ability to quickly assimilate extensive knowledge of a complex nature.

     

    Ability to relate well and establish rapport with students, other staff, parents, and community.

     

    Skills in time management, organization, communication- written and oral, interpersonal, creativity.

     

    Ability to work effectively in a team setting.

     

    Knowledge of best practices in academic advising.

     

    Experience with diverse student populations: ethnic, gender, age, economic level, first generation, etc.

     

    Ability to work effectively with students of varying levels of academic preparedness.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    Previous experience in higher education setting. Experience working with Learning Communities, Living Learning Communities, or Residential Colleges. Familiarity with Honors programs. Professional computer skills, Banner and Excel knowledge. Working knowledge of social media.
