Nursing Students – Gain Experience as a Casual PCT on Our Med/Surg/Peds Unit!

Are you a current nursing student looking to build hands-on experience? Join our Med/Surg/Peds team as a Casual Patient Care Technician!

This flexible opportunity allows you to develop clinical skills, work with all age groups, and grow alongside a supportive care team

Responsibilities:

+ Assist with daily living activities (bathing, feeding, toileting, ambulating, repositioning, transporting)

+ Support physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies under RN supervision

+ Perform core clinical tasks: vital signs, blood glucose, I&O, specimen collection, Foley care, telemetry application

+ Complete advanced skills as trained: phlebotomy, EKG, catheter removal, bladder scans, dressings, NG tube care

+ Provide patient and family instruction as directed by RN; apply and monitor restraints per protocol

+ Document care and observations accurately in the medical record

+ Respond to call lights, phones, meal trays, and transport requests as part of unit support

+ Report equipment issues and ensure proper communication across departments

+ Demonstrate cultural awareness, professionalism, and teamwork in all interactions

+ Participate in self-review, seek feedback, and engage in continuous learning and improvement

+ High school diploma or GED required

+ One of the following is also required:

+ 1 year of general healthcare experience

+ 6+ months as a UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency (within 120 days)

+ Enrollment in a healthcare training program (PT/OT/PA, etc.) with at least one completed clinical rotation

+ Bachelor’s degree in a health sciences field

+ CPR certification (AHA approved) required within 30 days of hire; ACLS preferred
