Job Summary
The University of Utah Athletics Department is seeking an experienced, skilled, and innovative Broadcast Director to assist with the broadcast production of athletic events and related content. This position will aid in the oversight of ESPN+ broadcast productions, including planning, coordinating, directing, and executing high-quality broadcasts for Utah Athletics’ events across digital streaming platforms and in-venue video-boards. This role demands a dynamic leader with a deep understanding of sports broadcast production, excellent technical skills, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
Responsibilities
+ **Live Event Broadcast Direction** : Direct and manage the live broadcast of Utah Athletics events, including basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball, soccer, and other sporting events, ensuring the broadcast runs smoothly and meets high production standards. This includes ESPN+ productions as well as videoboard productions.
+ **Production Team Leadership** : Lead the broadcast production team on event days, including camera operators, audio engineers, graphics designers, and other production personnel, ensuring all aspects of the broadcast align with the vision and goals of the Athletics Department.
+ **Broadcast Planning** : Occasionally collaborate with the Athletics Communications and Digital Media teams to plan broadcast schedules, identify key storylines, and ensure all technical requirements are met for live and recorded broadcasts.
+ **Creative Oversight** : Alongside with the show producer, provide creative direction for broadcast content, including graphics, replays, special features, and highlight packages, ensuring a cohesive and professional product that aligns with Utah Athletics’ branding and identity.
+ **Technical Management** : Manage certain technical aspects of broadcast production, including camera setups, lighting, audio, and broadcast equipment, while troubleshooting issues that arise during live events.
+ **Innovation and Improvement** : Stay current with industry trends and emerging technologies to enhance the quality and efficiency of live broadcasts, making recommendations for new tools and processes that improve the fan experience.
+ **Compliance and Standards** : Ensure all broadcasts adhere to NCAA , Big 12, and University of Utah guidelines, standards, and compliance regulations.
+ **Event Coverage Outside of Game Days** : Direct the production of special events, such as concerts, graduations, and Xtreme sports (Supercross, Monster Jam, etc.), and other non-game-related content, providing a high level of broadcast quality.

Minimum Qualifications
+ Bachelor’s degree in Broadcasting, Journalism/Communications, Media Production, or a related field.
+ 5+ years of experience in broadcast and video-board production, with a focus on live sports events and directing.
+ Proven experience in directing live television or streaming broadcasts, with a deep understanding of the technical and creative elements of sports production.
+ Expertise with broadcast equipment, including cameras, switchers, audio, and graphics systems (Ross Acuity, Grass Valley K-Frame, EVS /Dreamcatcher/Dyno, Sony/Grass Valley cameras, Ross XPression).
+ Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate and manage a diverse group of production professionals.
+ Excellent communication and problem-solving skills, with the ability to handle high-pressure situations and troubleshoot issues on the fly.
+ A passion for sports and a strong understanding of college athletics and the unique aspects of live sports production.
+ Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, meet tight deadlines, and work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, based on the sports schedule.
+ Knowledge of NCAA and ESPN broadcasting rules and regulations is preferred.
Preferences
+ Experience with live streaming platforms and digital broadcasting (e.g., ESPN+, BTN+).
+ Experience with broadcast graphics and animation software (e.g., Xpression, Adobe Creative Suite).
+ Familiarity with University of Utah Athletics, its programs, and its fan base.
+ Previous experience working in a college or professional sports broadcasting environment.
+ Knowledge of remote and on site production environments (production trailers).
