The Unix/Linux Senior Engineer will provide information technology services to support a small U.S. federal government agency in Washington, DC. This position will have a primary focus on server and application support in Data Analytics Platform environment. This includes delivering technical infrastructure services for engineering, maintenance and support of the agency’s enterprise DAP environments in Unix/Linux and the Cloud. Strong technical knowledge in system administration and broad experience in troubleshooting of various hosted applications such as SAS, Rstudio, SFTP, ability to assist Oracle DBAs are required
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:
+ Provide expert-level support in the design, implementation, configuration, and maintenance of Linux/Unix-based enterprise systems, with a focus on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) environments.
+ Manage and optimize DAP (Data Analytics Platform) workloads and infrastructure, including performance tuning and integration of Oracle databases and related components.
+ Proactively monitor, log, and analyze system and service events, including outages, performance issues, and security incidents, across both virtualized and bare-metal environments.
+ Apply critical thinking to troubleshoot and resolve complex system and application issues, including those requiring unfamiliar or advanced command-line tools or scripting solutions.
+ Lead initiatives involving the integration, hardening, patching, and automation of Linux/Unix systems, supporting both cloud and on-premises infrastructures.
+ Maintain up-to-date documentation, including architecture diagrams, configuration standards, procedural guides, and operational runbooks for system and database environments.
+ Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, stakeholders, DBAs, and third-party vendors to ensure efficient and secure operations of core platforms and services.
+ Champion innovation by evaluating and implementing new technologies, tools, and scripts, demonstrating a continuous learning mindset and comfort working beyond familiar command sets.
+ Provide subject matter expertise and mentorship on Red Hat system administration, shell scripting, security configurations, and storage/network configurations.
+ Deliver both scheduled and ad hoc operational support and incident response, including participation in after-hours or on-call rotations as needed.
+ Support and enforce best practices for user and system access control, automation, backup/recovery processes, and system monitoring, including DAP-related integrations and Oracle DB system dependencies.
+ Coordinate server and application migrations, upgrades, and lifecycle management activities while minimizing downtime and maintaining data integrity.
+ Ensure Linux/Unix systems are compliant with enterprise security standards and capable of supporting evolving business and regulatory requirements.
DESIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
+ US Citizenship and ability to obtain a high-level public trust clearance required.
+ Ten (10) years of experience performing systems engineering duties within the technology environments listed below
+ Virtual Environments: Amazon Web Services (e.g., CloudFront, VPC, API Gateway, EC2, RDS)
+ Red Hat: support of onsite and AWS instances and assistance with installed customer applications.
+ Solaris: Ability to support Solaris is a plus.
