    Job Description

    The Police Lieutenant is responsible for direction, planning, organization, staffing, and control of Sergeants, patrol officers and other subordinates within the Old Dominion University Police Department (sworn and non-sworn).

    Knowledge, skills and abilities

     

    Considerable knowledge of and skills in modern police practices and techniques.

     

    Considerable knowledge of leadership principles and management techniques.

     

    Strong working knowledge of investigative techniques and practices. Considerable knowledge of Virginia and applicable federal laws. Considerable working knowledge of administrative functions in areas of policy and police supervision.

     

    Excellent oral and written communication skills.

     

    Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and direct the efforts relating to law enforcement operations.

     

    Demonstrated ability to comprehend and interpret written instructions, and work independently to solve problems involving many variables.

    Special licenses, registration or certification

    Certification as a police officer as mandated by a state department of Criminal Justice Services or police certifying body. Possession of a valid VA drivers license. VA DCJS LEO Certification will be required within one year of hiring.

     

    Education or training

     

    Graduation from high school or equivalent, and police leadership and supervisory training related to the duties of the position.

    Level and type of experience

    Considerable police supervisory experience within a public law enforcement agency at the rank of Sergeant or higher within patrol and investigation divisions. Completion of a first-line supervisory and/or a mid-management law enforcement training/course of study.

    Additional Considerations (supplemental knowledge, skills, abilities, education, experience, licensure, certification)

    Considerable mid-management experience in a university police department of similar size and complexity. Va DCJS Instructor certification.

     

    Conditions of Employment

     

    University Police Department employees are considered essential personnel for emergency conditions/inclement weather and expected to report to duty during these conditions.

     

    Must have certification as a Police Officer as mandated by a state department of Criminal Justice Services or police certifying body. Must obtain VA DCJS LEO certification within one year of hire.

     

    Subject to random drug testing. Must successfully pass a comprehensive medical screening, an extensive background investigation, polygraph and psychological testing.

     

    Must obtain VCIN certification within one year of hiring.

     

    Considered “essential personnel” for emergency conditions and inclement weather and expected to report to duty during those conditions.

     

    Must be capable of working as required shift schedules which may include days, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.

     

    Some overtime required.

     

    This position is designated as sensitive. A fingerprint-based criminal history check will be required of the final candidate.
