Posting Summary
The Assistant Director of Orientation and Student Advancement at the University of Vermont leads the coordination and delivery of communications, digital engagement, and transitional support for new undergraduate students and their families during onboarding and orientation. Reporting to the Director of Orientation and Student Advancement, this position directs the strategic development and implementation of onboarding communications, manages the New Student Checklist, and directs virtual orientation programming. The Assistant Director also oversees social media outreach and web content updates to ensure students and families are well-informed and supported throughout their transition to UVM . This position collaborates closely with campus partners and student leaders, providing excellent customer service and helping ensure an inclusive, engaging, and coordinated onboarding experience. In alignment with institutional retention goals, this role supports efforts to enhance student belonging and persistence by contributing to student success initiatives, developing targeted outreach, and supporting post-orientation programming.
Minimum Qualifications (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
+ Bachelor’s degree in a related field with 2–3 years of experience in a higher education setting, particularly in student affairs, orientation, or related areas.
+ Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to craft inclusive content and engage effectively with diverse audiences, including students, families, and campus stakeholders.
+ Demonstrated ability and commitment to providing responsive, empathetic, and culturally competent customer service in a student-centered environment.
+ Proven ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines while maintaining attention to detail.
+ Familiarity with issues related to student transition, access, engagement, and retention.
+ Demonstrated discretion in handling sensitive or confidential student information.
+ Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook), and comfort learning new systems and technology tools.
+ Experience with or willingness to learn tools such as Slate ( CRM ), Drupal (web content management), and Basecamp (project management).
+ Commitment to fostering inclusion and belonging in all aspects of work and student engagement.
+ Demonstrated experience planning and coordinating student programs or large-scale events, with a focus on onboarding, orientation, or retention.
Desirable Qualifications
+ Master’s degree in higher education, student affairs, communication, or a related field.
+ Experience using Slate, Navigate360, or other CRM platforms for student communication and data tracking.
+ Proficiency with Drupal or similar web content management systems used in higher education.
+ Demonstrated ability to develop and execute social media strategies for student engagement, particularly using platforms like ZeeMee and Instagram.
+ Experience coordinating large-scale events such as orientation or campus-wide programs.
+ Familiarity with managing communication workflows for incoming students and families, ideally using project management tools like Basecamp.
+ Graphic design or content creation skills (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite) for outreach and promotional materials.
+ Knowledge of best practices in student onboarding, transition, and retention.
+ Experience with data-informed outreach and assessment practices that support student success.
+ Deep understanding of the needs and experiences of first-generation, transfer, and other underrepresented student populations.
Anticipated Pay Range Up to $59,345
