Description
The Histology Technician is responsible for preparing tissue specimens for pathological examination; helping maintain laboratory equipment; training in the use of new laboratory equipment; performing routine histology procedures; preparing solutions required for any histological examination; plus, all related job duties as assigned.
+ Slide Preparation
+ Cuts tissue
+ Assure appropriate specimen accessioning and labeling.
+ Maintain the integrity of the specimen and patient identification.
+ Demonstrates the ability to accurately prioritize and triage specimens, handles and disposes of specimens and chemical waste based on the laboratory’s procedure manual, and ensures compliance with regulatory policies
+ Prepares and maintains reagents and equipment
+ Maintains procedures and records to meet all regulatory standards
+ The Histology Technician is responsible for solving numerous problems that include:
+ Patient’s specimen and requisition are received in the lab, but no orders are in the lab LIS system.
+ Patient specimen is received in the lab with no requisition and no orders in the LIS system
+ Requisition is sent with no specimen.
+ Dealing with doctors or nurses when problems arise
+ Performs other tasks and duties as may be added from time to time (such as ordering supplies)
+ Work is performed in accordance with established procedures and by using independent judgment and discretion. The Histology Technician should be able to handle complaints and determine proper courses of action to take
+ Reviews all procedure manuals annually or when changes occur in a timely manner when assigned
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
+ Must have a Degree in Histology or related discipline and be Certified. At least one year experience in Histology laboratory required
+ ASCP
+ Maintains an understanding of the latest techniques and guidelines in the pathology lab
+ Must have the ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail when receiving instructions from physicians or others, reading and interpreting procedures and other related material, as well as being able to work with different types of laboratory equipment.
+ Must have a basic knowledge of the rules and regulations that the laboratory is governed under.
+ Must have ability to work safely with infectious material and/or hazardous material
+ Must have interpersonal skills as well as verbal and written communication skills necessary to communicate effectively with physicians, nurses, co-workers, and others.
+ Must have computer skills in word processing, excel, and an understanding of the laboratories and practices computer system
