Director of Workforce Development
Matchbook Learning & The Match High School - Indianapolis, IN
Our Vision
We believe every child regardless of status or condition, can be deeply known, loved and
flourishing. We are turning around formerly the lowest performing school in the city and State.
The means by which we accomplish this vision, our mission, is that we personalize learning,
within a restorative community, fostering resilience and excellence, while preparing students for
real-world opportunities. We believe we can reverse the multi-generational cycle of poverty
afflicting communities across the nation by replacing it with a multi-generational cycle of
affluence that connects children from Kindergarten all the way through 12th grade, in
personalized experiences of growing self-awareness, agency and eventual mastery of
vocational pathway(s) that unlock their passions and capacity.
Who We Are
Matchbook Learning is a non-profit organization with two charter schools:
+ Matchbook – a K-8 charter restart of the former Wendell Phillips School 63 on the near Westside of Indianapolis, serving over 750 students in partnership with IPS and authorized by the City of Indianapolis.
+ The Match – a brand new charter high school, opening in 2024 with a 9th grade class and growing to a full career and technical academy, with vocational tracks with community partners so that students while in school can apprentice in dynamic fields such as welding, construction, electrical and plumbing, entrepreneurship, healthcare and so much more. We do this inside two newly developed buildings each with its own vocational trade areas of development in partnership with our authorizer, Trine University.
We are addressing the systemic barriers to post-secondary success while building a pipeline of
skilled workers who can meet the demands of Indiana’s workforce.
We acquired two industrial buildings in our community and developed a state-of-the-art career
and technical vocational high school, The Match, in 2024. We have designed this high school to
serve our students based on our research on both what we know to be their vocational passions
and interests of students along with what we believe are the five key mindsets, knowledge and
skills needed for post-secondary success today:
+ Craftsmanship...
+ Technology...
+ Health & Wellness...
+ Entrepreneurship...
+ Expression...
Together, these pathways provide students with the tools and knowledge to thrive in both their
careers and their communities.
Our Opportunity
In a community where schools have long been disparaged as “failing,” Matchbook Learning and
the Match embody a new promise to provide students with high-quality learning experiences
and to close the gap between education, community, and career development.
By leveraging modern advances in technology and the science of learning and development
while connecting students with the community through meaningful real-world learning and skill
development, we are trailblazing a new model of education that adapts to the unique interests
and aspirations of each learner while equipping them with the foundational knowledge, skills,
and dispositions needed to thrive well beyond our walls.
Our story is just beginning, and we are seeking a new team member to help co-create and
enact this bright future.
Position Overview
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Director of Workforce Development to join our
leadership team. This role will serve both our K-8 and high school programs, leading the
development and implementation of curriculum and training that embeds Indiana workforce
development standards in grades K-12. Additionally, the Director will be responsible for creating
and maintaining employer partnerships that result in apprenticeships, internships, and full-time
job placement after graduation.
The Director of Workforce Development will work closely with the K-12 Director of
Personalized Learning, as well as the K-8 and High School Principals and their leadership
teams to align curriculum with state workforce development standards and with our five
vocational tracks. They will create a roadmap for implementation and will support the leadership
teams in continuously monitoring and improving implementation and scaffolding supports for
teachers and learners alike.
The Director of Workforce Development and the Director of Personalized Learning will jointly
coordinate areas of overlap, including career readiness, real-world project integration, and
reflective assessments of student progress. They will participate in weekly and quarterly joint
planning meetings to align on student data, career pathways, and personalized learning
experiences.
