Job Description

Small Learning Community Leader

Reports to: Head of School

Responsibilities:

+ Fosters unit cohesion and spirit, and coordinates unit activities, including common planning time, student support, and special activities.

+ Serves as an instructional leader, including spending regular time in the classroom, observing teachers, supporting instructional change and writing evaluations that are consistent with BPS standards.

+ Leads a conversation around whole school change, including creation of the school's Whole School Improvement Plan and the implementation of the workshop model in all classes.

+ Coordinates student support for the unit, working closely with individual students and teachers on academic and discipline issues as they arise. Ensures consistent implementation of the Code of Discipline and school-based rules in the unit.

+ Advocates for teachers to create optimal teaching conditions in the unit and oversees teacher induction, mentoring and teacher retention efforts.

+ Oversees administration of all standardized assessments (GRADE, MCAS and PSAT) and formative assessments (district exams and writing prompts)

+ Sits on the school’s administrative team and participates in decisions regarding the running of the entire high school, including staffing, curriculum, professional development, student assessment data and school climate.

+ An active part of the hiring process for teaching, guidance, and administrative positions.

+ Works closely with partners to maximize academic services to all students such as tutoring, mentoring, college partnerships, after-school programs and summer enrichment activities.

+ Develops family engagement by working closely with parents to support students in becoming successful; also keeps parents up-to date on student academics and attendance.

+ Oversees guidance services, including scheduling, programming, and college and career preparation activities in cooperation with the coordinator of guidance services.

+ Ensures the equitable distribution of instructional materials, supplies, and textbooks to all academic staff in the unit.

+ Works cooperatively with the Headmaster on all areas of common concern: planning the school's budget, working with school partners, addressing discipline issues that impede teaching and learning, and engaging of parents, staff and community.

+ Works closely with the Headmaster and other school staff to plan and support professional development and meaningful common planning time activities for teachers.

+ Coordinates School Fair.

+ Performs other related duties as requested by the Headmaster.

Qualifications Required:

+ Master’s Degree in a related field or Education

+ Massachusetts Principal/Assistant Principal (9-12) OR Supervisor/Director license (9-12)

+ Massachusetts teacher’s license in a content area (9-12)

+ At least three years teaching experience and/or three years administrative experience.

+ Experience in establishing and maintaining a multi-cultural community of learning

+ Demonstrates knowledge of creating and facilitating business and community partnerships.

+ Current authorization to work in the United States - Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment

Qualifications Preferred: Teaching or administrative experience in an urban high school

Terms: BASAS, Group 10B, 211 days
