Desktop Engineering Manager
**Required Qualifications:** (as evidenced by an attached resume)
Bachelor’s degree. Five (5) years of professional IT experience supporting Windows and macOS desktop environments. Supervisory experience or experience in a technical lead role. Experience with systems scripting or automation tools (e.g., PowerShell, Bash, Python). Proven experience managing endpoint configuration using Group Policy Objects (GPOs) and Mobile Device Management (MDM) platforms such as Microsoft Intune and Jamf. Experience managing or supporting virtual desktop infrastructure (e.g., Azure Virtual Desktop, Citrix, VMware).
Preferred Qualifications:
Advanced degree. Experience working in a higher education or large-scale enterprise IT environment. Familiarity with Azure Active Directory (AAD) for identity and device management, including conditional access and group-based policy deployments. Experience with software deployment tools (e.g., MECM/SCCM, Intune, Munki, Jamf Pro). Familiarity with Pharos or equivalent print management solutions. Knowledge of endpoint security policies, standards, and best practices. Certifications such as Microsoft 365 Certified: Modern Desktop Administrator Associate, Jamf 200/300, ITIL, or CompTIA Security .
Brief Description of Duties:
The Desktop Engineering Manager leads a team of desktop engineers in designing, maintaining, and optimizing endpoint management and support systems across the university. This role will manage a team of technical professionals responsible for managing enterprise desktop solutions, including Windows and Apple MDM platforms, GPO configuration, desktop imaging, software packaging, Pharos print management, and the university’s AVD/VDI environment. In collaboration with field support technicians, IT security, infrastructure, and application teams, this role ensures that all endpoint systems are secure, efficient, and scalable to support the university’s academic, administrative, and research needs.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Team Management:
• Supervise, coach, and support a team of Desktop Engineers.
• Establish individual and team goals aligned with departmental strategy.
• Oversee team staffing, scheduling, timekeeping, professional development, and performance management.
• Promote cross-training and documentation to ensure knowledge continuity and service resilience.
• Foster a customer-centric, inclusive, and collaborative team environment.
Endpoint Management & Configuration:
• Oversee the design and management of Windows and macOS MDM environments (Intune and Jamf).
• Manage desktop imaging processes, software packaging, and patch management workflows.
• Implement and maintain Group Policy Objects (GPOs) to support security and usability standards.
• Coordinate UNIX workstation support for research environments, ensuring system configurations meet lab-specific software, security, and performance requirements.
• Collaborate with field support teams to ensure consistent, scalable desktop configurations and support.
• Ensure device compliance with cybersecurity standards and industry best practices.
Virtual Desktop & Print Management:
• Oversee the Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) and VDI environment, including deployment, configuration, and user support.
• Manage the Pharos printing system across labs, classrooms, and staff environments.
• Ensure high availability, user satisfaction, and performance of these platforms.
Collaboration & Service Delivery:
• Work closely with ITSM, Information Security, Field Support, and other DoIT teams to support a unified service delivery model.
• Serve as a technical escalation point for complex endpoint issues.
• Collaborate with procurement and finance teams to ensure appropriate hardware/software purchasing and licensing.
• Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for team functions.
Asset, Budget & License Management:
• Participate in budgeting processes for equipment and software related to desktop and endpoint services.
• Assist with inventory tracking, software license management, and contract/vendor oversight.
Special Projects & Strategic Initiatives:
• Contribute to IT strategic planning and digital transformation initiatives.
• Lead or support departmental and university-wide IT improvement projects.
• Stay current with industry trends and recommend emerging technologies as appropriate.
Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
SUNY implemented a hybrid telecommuting pilot program. This position has been approved to participate in the pilot, which allows for up to 5 remote days per pay period.
