    Academic ASAP Student Advisor (Multiple Positions)

    POSITION DETAILS

    Founded in 1971 in Long Island City, Queens **,** LaGuardia Community College is one of seven community colleges of the City University of New York (CUNY). LaGuardia offers more than sixty associate degree programs and more than fifty workforce training, ESOL, GED, and pre-college programs. In 2023, LaGuardia served approximately 24,000 students. More than one-third of LaGuardia’s degree-seeking students are born outside the United States; they come from 136 countries and speak 43 heritage languages. Sixty percent are first-generation college students.

     

    Virtually all LaGuardia students are ethnic minorities (89 percent), 58 percent are women, 27 percent are over the age of 25. Forty-six percent of associate degree students are Hispanic. Upon graduation most students transfer to four-year colleges, typically in CUNY, to complete their baccalaureate degrees. Graduates of career programs such as Nursing, Computer Technology, and Veterinary Technology enter the workforce.     Reporting to the ASAP Associate Director, the ASAP Academic Student Advisor will accomplish the duties listed in the CUNY Title Overview as well as the following responsibilities:

    + Deliver comprehensive advisement support services to an assigned group of students through degree completion, according to campus program advisement rubric;

    + Utilize campus degree maps to create semester by semester academic plans for freshman, continuing and/or transfer students as appropriate;

    + Consistently review student progress and provide timely interventions to keep students on track toward degree;

    + Enter/document/track all student contact in ASAP program and/or college student database, recommend referral and services as appropriate;

    + Run student contact queries/reports consistently to determine outreach and follow up needed to meet students with the frequency and modality required by the program;

    + Conduct workshops and group advisement on topics of relevance and interest;

    + Performs related duties as assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in an appropriate discipline and four years related experience.

     

    Bachelor’s degree (master’s preferred) in an appropriate discipline and four years related experience. A Master’s degree in Psychology, Counseling, Educational Administration, Educational Psychology and/or Social Work may be substituted for 2 years’ experience. The ideal candidate will have:

     

    + Experience providing guidance, support, and services to students.

    + Strong understanding of the educational needs and challenges facing students from diverse urban backgrounds.

    + Proven ability to maintain accurate and detailed student records.

    + Demonstrated skill in understanding and respecting cultural differences.

    + Proficient in Microsoft Office (particularly Access and Excel) with an aptitude for learning new systems as needed.

    + Excellent organizational, collaborative, communication, and facilitation skills. Knowledge of equitable and inclusive advisement practices to support students.

    OTHER QUALIFICATONS

    Experience presenting workshops, seminars and working with community college students desirable. Familiarity with and ability to utilize position-related computerized applications and information technology.

     

    - Demonstrated self-sufficiency, good problem-solving and follow-up skills.

     

    - Flexibility to work some evenings and weekends.

     

    - Proven history working in retention based programming.

     

    - Ability to work in a centralized program where the reporting structure includes a central CUNY ASAP Office.

     

    - Ability to speak more than one language, a plus

    Accelerated Study in Associate Programs (ASAP) helps students earn their college degree as quickly as possible, by removing the financial, academic, and personal obstacles that many students confront. Key ASAP program features include a consolidated block schedule, cohorts by major, required full-time study and comprehensive advisement and career development services. Financial incentives include tuition waivers for financial aid eligible students, yearly textbook vouchers, and MetroCards for all students.     The ASAP Advisor is a member of an integrated College team providing individual academic, career and related support to an assigned group of college students as they progress through the program.

     

    - Delivers comprehensive advisement support services to an assigned group of students through degree completion

     

    - Conducts workshops and group advisement on topics of relevance and interest

     

    - Reviews student progress and tracks student use of academic support services

     

    - Conducts regular outreach to faculty and other college staff as needed to support student success

     

    - Maintains accurate tracking data and notes for each assigned student, recommending appropriate referrals and opportunity programs

     

    - Supports annual recruitment of students

     

    - Organizes periodic special events and programs for students, faculty and staff

     

    - Performs related duties as assigned.

    $62,411 - $68,004

Once implemented, salaries of eligible employees will be adjusted by 6.09% with additional increases of 3.25% effective 9/1/2025 and 3.5% effective 9/1/26, in accordance with the terms of the PSC-CUNY collective bargaining agreement.
