    Job Description:

    We are looking for a Traffic Technician to support our Community and Neighborhoods team.

    About the Position:

    In this role you will perform technical data collection and analysis regarding the installation, removal or redesign of traffic control devices. You will also assist in providing recommendations regarding traffic flow, traffic control or pedestrian safety.

    Position Salary Range:

    Traffic Technician I:

    Entry: $21.99/hr.

     

    Year 2: $23.26/hr.

     

    Year 4: $27.23/hr.

     

    Year 6: $30.16/hr.

    Traffic Technician II:

    Entry: $24.36/hr.

     

    Year 2: $25.78/hr.

     

    Year 4: $27.23/hr.

     

    Year 6: $30.16/hr.

    Traffic Technician III:

    Entry: $26.72/hr.

     

    Year 2: $28.30/hr.

     

    Year 4: $29.86/hr.

     

    Year 6: $33.09/hr.

    Traffic Technician IV:

    Entry: $29.47/hr.

     

    Year 2: $31.19/hr.

     

    Year 4: $32.94/hr.

     

    Year 6: $36.47/hr.

    Key Responsibilities:

    + Project Support & AdministrationAssists in planning, organizing, and executing projects related to traffic studies, data gathering, and system maintenance. Monitors the progress of technical programs, manages service request records, and supports resource alignment within the division.

    + Traffic & Safety StudiesConducts data collection and special studies related to traffic safety, collisions, speed trends, and operational performance. Supports reporting for issues such as crash hotspots and fatal reviews, and assists in GIS, CAD, or other digital analysis work. Trains staff on findings and improved practices.

    + Data Management & Software ApplicationsCreates and maintains databases and computer tools to support traffic engineering needs. Analyzes collected data to identify patterns and determine future study needs. Supports other staff in learning and using new software tools. Provides technical support and troubleshooting for divisional data systems.

    + Field Studies & ReportingResponds to internal and external requests for traffic evaluations, including stop/yield analysis, school crossings, speed assessments, and parking studies. Deploys and maintains field equipment such as traffic counters and classifiers. Prepares clear, data-informed reports and may assist in the design of traffic control layouts, road changes, or bike/pedestrian infrastructure.

    + Customer Service & Complaint ResolutionCommunicates with residents, businesses, and agencies regarding traffic-related concerns. Performs field investigations, collects relevant data, and coordinates with engineers to recommend practical solutions. Follows up with complainants on outcomes.

    + Plan Review & PermittingReviews traffic impacts of proposed construction or development projects. Assists with traffic control plans and issues permits, ensuring compliance with local and state standards. May perform field inspections and coordinate with enforcement and engineering staff as needed.

    + Leadership & MentorshipLeads or supports team efforts by assigning project tasks, evaluating study needs, and mentoring other Traffic Technicians. Helps manage workloads, ensure quality control, and guide junior staff in data collection and technical skills.

    + Other Duties as AssignedProvides general support for Transportation Division goals and may take on additional responsibilities as needed.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Traffic Technician I:

    + Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalency.

    Traffic Technician II:

    + Graduation from high school and two years of paid work experience in traffic engineering, street marking and signing operations or other related field. Two years post high school training or formal course work in a traffic or civil engineering trade, such as surveying, or traffic control may be substituted for the two years paid work experience.

    + Ability to make decisions which comply with traffic engineering standards.

    Traffic Technician III:

    + Graduation from high school and four years’ paid work experience in traffic engineering, street marking and signing operations or other related field, one year of which must include traffic engineering data collection, analysis and reporting. Two years' post high school training or formal course work in civil or traffic engineering trade such as drafting, surveying or traffic control may be substituted for two of the four years' work experience.

    + Ability to communicate complex data in report form.

    + Ability to make decisions which comply with traffic engineering standards.

    Traffic Technician IV:

    + Graduation from high school and six years paid work experience In traffic engineering, street marking and signing operations or other traffic related field, two years of which must include project coordination, and comprehensive computerized statistical data collection, analysis and reporting. Two years' post high school training or formal course work In civil or traffic engineering may be substituted for two of the six years' work experience.

    + Proficiency with computer hardware and software used to collect, retrieve and tabulate traffic data, including database and traffic engineering programs, spreadsheets and word processing. Demonstrated expertise in developing computer programs for traffic engineering, GIS or other engineering applications and the ability to implement, install, and maintain computer equipment and programs.

    + Ability to communicate complex technical data in report form.

    + Ability to make decisions which comply with traffic engineering standards, as well as think and work conceptually with originality.

    Required for all levels:

    + Proficiency with computers and computer software used to collect and tabulate data.

    + Ability to obtain Salt Lake City Barricading certificate (Safety and Traffic Control in Construction Zones) and State of Utah Flagger certification within time frame specified by the hiring authority (Required prior to hire as a level III or IV).

    + Ability to communicate effectively with the public, contractors, and engineers and mediate differences.

    + Ability to visit and maneuver around City streets, intersections, etc. Use of city or personal vehicle will require a valid driver’s license or driving privilege card.

    Working Conditions:

    + Frequent movement from office to work site locations and exposure to various weather conditions. Occasional exposure to lifting, carrying and placement of equipment that weighs up to 50 lbs. Infrequent exposure to heights of 15-20' when placing time laps cameras. Frequent exposure to vehicular traffic in the performance of field studies. Prolonged periods of concentrating on figures and computer reports, and exposure to video display screens.

    + Intermittent, intense exposure to stress as a result of human behavior and divisional deadlines.

    Career Ladder:

    + Once an incumbent meets all requirements of the position, they may be nominated for advancement to Traffic Technician II, III, or IV. Such persons are advanced following divisional recommendations, the approval of the department director, and concurrence of the Department of Human Resources.
