    Description of Work Unit

    CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University ( CSU ). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and within CSU to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.

    Position Summary

    A Range and Training Land Assessment ( RTLA ) Assistant Coordinator (Professional/Individual Contributor Level II) position is available at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin with Colorado State University ( CSU ) and the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands ( CEMML ). This position will support the RTLA component of the Integrated Training Area Program ( ITAM ) at U.S Army Garrison Fort McCoy. Tasks include training land assessments, planning assessments, vegetation sampling, plant identification, restoration site monitoring, data entry, and report development. This is a field and office-based position. The RTLA Assistant Coordinator will supervise seasonal field crew staff and act as the lead on all field assessments, ensuring data quality.

     

    Fort McCoy is a United States Army Reserve installation located between Sparta and Tomah, Wisconsin. The 60,000-acre installation hosts a variety of diverse training habitats, including forest and prairie ecosystems. The area has warm summers and cold winters. The installation supports year-round training from all branches of the armed services in a variety of realistic training scenarios.

    Required Job Qualifications

    + BA/BS in biology, environmental science, wildlife biology, natural resources management, restoration ecology or closely related field.

    + A minimum of five (5) years post-degree work experience in natural resource management including documented experience conducting field assessments/surveys.

    + The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

    + Experience working on military lands.

    + Experience interacting and coordinating with federal, state, and military personnel.

    + Documented proficiencies with the Microsoft Office suite of products.

    + Experience tracking projects and fieldwork and ensuring deliverables are completed on time and as required.

    + Experience collecting natural resources data using Global Positioning System ( GPS ), tablets, and similar devices; and the use of Collector/Field Maps, Survey 123.

    + Familiar with the flora and fauna of Wisconsin.

    + Skilled in ArcPro including database management, data analysis, and map making.

    + Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, regulations and requirements regarding environmental protections (e.g., Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, Migratory Bird Treaty Act, NEPA , Sikes Act, etc.).

    + Experience writing, developing, and reviewing survey memos, technical reports, and presentations.

    + Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the start date. A valid driver’s license must be maintained for continued employment.

    + Ability to work outdoors and perform strenuous labor under all hazardous working conditions (e.g., intense heat, cold, high humidity, noxious plants and animals).

    + Ability to lift 40 pounds repeatedly without assistance.

    + Ability to follow directions, work collaboratively with others as part of a team as well as independently, all while maintaining safe working standards.

    Preferred Job Qualifications

    + MA/MS in biology, environmental science, wildlife biology, natural resources management, restoration ecology or closely related field.

    + Experience conducting, managing, and analyzing natural resource data (flora, fauna, land management).

    + Experience working in a highly structured organization and knowledge of DoD instructions, directives, guidance, and processes.

    + Familiar with the execution of natural resources/ ITAM programs on military lands.

    + Knowledge of or experience with military Integrated Natural Resource Management Plans and the Range Complex Master Plans.

    + Experience operating all terrain vehicles (ATVs) and 4×4 trucks/vehicles.

    + Use a handheld GPS and/or ESRI field map software to collect field data.

    + Identify and archive plant collections and maintain the herbarium.

    + Identify and document soil concerns, safety hazards, vegetation concerns, and maneuver damage.

    + Operate ATVs and 4×4 vehicles to reach assessment sites.

    + Perform long term monitoring of completed LRAM projects and the training land conditions at Fort McCoy.
