Job Description
The Executive Director for University Assessment is an advanced professional who leads the university’s efforts in designing, implementing, and evaluating student learning assessment policies and practices. It is responsible for developing and implementing multi-year strategic priorities and annual work plans. The systems led by this position are interwoven into processes and cultures across the university. As the university’s assessment expert, this role offers comprehensive guidance to faculty, staff, and administration on assessment strategies and best practices. By analyzing aggregated assessment data, the Director informs university and system leaders about areas of excellence, student competencies, and opportunities for continuous improvement.
+ 50% Develop and lead assessment of student learning strategies accompanied by annual work plans, aligning with the university’s mission, to ensure educational excellence. Evaluate the effectiveness of the strategic priorities and annual work plans; implement continuous improvement initiatives. This includes developing the assessment priorities and leading the accompanying strategies that assess students’ competencies and skills in the institution’s outcomes (Our Husky Compact), their academic programs’ outcomes, and the Liberal Education (Minnesota Transfer Curriculum) outcomes. The Director assesses the effectiveness of the strategies and uses data to revise the assessment processes for improvement.
+ 25% Develop and lead assessment policies and procedures across the university, ensuring alignment with institutional and programmatic accrediting agencies and supporting continuous improvement. Design and implement evaluation models to ensure effectiveness of the policies and procedures; generate and implement improvement initiatives. By using industry best practices, this role ensures integrity in university assessment processes. This includes creating assessment policies and procedures (infrastructure) to ensure the assessment processes are consistent, effective, and accurately report student learning. It may include identifying and implementing new technologies and best practices in the field.
+ 10% Communicate assessment findings, trends, continuous improvement efforts, and resulting changes in student learning to internal and external stakeholders to promote transparency and evidence educational effectiveness. This may include preparing/presenting aggregated reports for the campus community and Minnesota State on the assessment of student learning outcomes to inform program curriculum and pedagogy strategies and inform the university’s strategic initiatives. It also promotes transparency for students, their guardians, the community and state legislators.
+ 5% Oversee assessment information management systems to ensure their effectiveness. Ensure accurate, transparent, and useful documentation and maintenance of assessment findings, trends, continuous improvement efforts, and resulting changes in student learning. The director designs and oversees the systems and staff that manage these data.
+ 5% Develop and lead workshops/training sessions related to assessment policies and procedures to ensure consistent understanding and implementation across the university. The Director creates content and determines pedagogy most effective for educating faculty and staff on the university’s policies and processes.
+ 5% Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the smooth functioning of the division and enhance a positive reputation of the University.
Minimum Qualifications
+ Master’s or higher degree with at least five years of advanced professional administrative experience in the Academic Affairs division of a higher education institution (e.g. faculty chairperson, academic center director, academic administrator)
+ Three years of professional experience in higher education including instruction, assessment, curriculum, accreditation, and data analysis.
+ Comprehensive knowledge of assessment methodologies; curriculum design; accreditation standards; and data analysis and management methods.
+ Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
+ Proven ability to translate ideas into actionable plans.
+ Leadership skills to guide groups and collaboratively build commitment to assessment and continuous improvement practices.
+ Ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.
Preferred Qualification
+ Doctoral degree in a relevant field (e.g. education, higher education administration, leadership)
+ Five years of professional work experience in assessment of student learning within a higher education setting.
+ Supervisory experience in a collective bargaining environment.
