    Description of Work Unit

    Student-Athlete Support Services ( SASS ) is part of the Division of Academic Affairs, and reports directly to the Provost while working in close collaboration with Athletics. The mission of SASS is to inspire and cultivate AH-HA moments. The staff provides support for all student-athletes from the time they arrive on campus for a recruiting visit until they graduate. The staff connect student-athletes to resources, experiences and knowledge empowering them to reach their academic potential.

     

    Colorado State University is located in Fort Collins, a city of 161,000. Located 65 miles north of Denver, the city is nestled against the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and alongside the banks of the Cache La Poudre River. Fort Collins offers the convenience of a small town with the amenities of a larger city including a strong public school system, various recreational opportunities, cultural offerings, and dining venues. Residents experience a moderate 4-season climate with an average of 300 days of sunshine a year.

    Position Summary

    This position assists the department by supporting student-athletes to positively impact their collegiate experience, retention, persistence and graduation. This position will report to the Director of Student-Athlete Support Services and have oversight of the EXLU academic mentoring and tutor program. The Senior Learning Specialist will supervise a learning specialist and 30-40 student hourly employees as well as serve as the liaison to Student Disability Center.

     

    Through one-on-one and small group settings, the EXLU Program provides intensive educational experiences and services for students-athletes who are in need of academic skills support, have a documented learning disability or are looking for subject specific content review.

    Required Job Qualifications

    + Master’s degree in areas of education, special education, counseling, psychology or related field

    + Three years of experience as a learning specialist or equivalent position working with students with varied learning needs

    + Two years of experience supervising and evaluating staff

    + Demonstrated ability to teach literacy development strategies, writing skill development, study skills, and organization/time management skills

    Preferred Job Qualifications

    + Demonstrated experience collaborating with staff to develop comprehensive learning plans

    + Personal or professional commitment to CSU’s Principles of Community

    + Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws including Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act

    + Working knowledge of NCAA continuing eligibility rules

    + Knowledge of a wide range of learning strategies and study skills development techniques

    + Demonstrated ability to facilitate trainings for academic supports staff and athletic department staff regarding effective strategies to work with student-athletes with various type of learning styles

    + Working knowledge of screening tools, diagnostic assessments, and collaborative initiative(s) to support students with learning disabilities

    + Create, in collaboration with academic support staff, a tailored learning plan for student- athletes with academic skill needs. Learning plan may include, but not limited to: class scheduling recommendations, tutoring, and strategy sessions

    + Meet frequently with academic support staff to discuss student-athlete performance

    + Design learning skill workshops

    + Facilitate trainings for academic supports staff and athletic department staff regarding effective strategies to work with student-athletes with various type of learning styles

    + Collaborate with academic support staff to implement a tailored learning plan for the incoming summer bridge student-athletes

    + Use evidence based assessment tools annually to evaluate program effectiveness
