    Description of Work Unit

    The Department of Communication Studies at Colorado State University currently teaches more than 350 undergraduate majors and 30 graduate students. The graduate program offers a nationally recognized MA and Ph.D. The program offers education in three broad areas 1) film and media, 2) relational and organizational communication, and 3) rhetoric and civic engagement. We employ nearly 25 faculty members and six support staff. The department houses the Colorado State University Center for Public Deliberation (www.cpd.colostate.edu) and hosts the Act Human Rights Film Festival (actfilmest.org). The department is committed to the professional and personal growth of all of its members, offering robust support for professional development and a willingness to negotiate working conditions. The university and the department are committed to continuing to build a diverse and inclusive community and the Department of Communication Studies currently represents one of the most diverse majors on campus.

    Position Summary

    The Department of Communication Studies has a nationally recognized graduate program that offers the MA and PhD degrees in Communication and has approximately 30-36 students in residence. Additionally, the department has one of the larger undergraduate majors in the College of Liberal Arts and offers two minors. The Academic Programs Support Coordinator ( APSC ) will work with the Chair and the Directors of Graduate and Undergraduate Studies to recruit, retain, and assist with programming for students in our academic programs.

    Required Job Qualifications

    + MA or MS in Communication Studies, a Liberal Arts discipline, Student Affairs and Higher Education, or other closely related fields

    + Excellent oral and written communication skills

    + Excellent organizational and analytical skills

    + Ability to learn and use Excel, Word, and other CSU online systems

    + Demonstrated commitment to CSU’s Principles of Community

    Preferred Job Qualifications

    + Experience working in higher education

    + Demonstrated ability to successfully manage projects

    + Experience teaching undergraduate students or conducting trainings

    + Develop recruitment plans in collaboration with the Directors of Undergraduate and Graduate Studies.

    + Organize and actively recruit potential students during recruiting events including graduate fairs and receptions at regional and national professional conferences as well as undergraduate events (e.g., Choose CSU )

    + Develop and maintain communication with graduate program applicants and support their application process

    + Plan, produce, and provide travel support for yearly graduate recruiting visits to Colorado State University

    + Understand, use, and maintain Slate the online application management program

    + Liaise with Graduate Admissions and CLA Admissions

    + Create and maintain relationships with current graduate students throughout their lifecycle in the program

    + Connect graduate students with non-academic university resources e.g., financial aid, residency, wellness programs, the health network

    + Prepare students to meet all Graduate School and departmental curricular requirements including forms and deadline reminders

    + Advise graduate students on processes and procedures for department professional development and research funds

    + Collaborate on the advise and processing of Graduate Teaching Assistant hirings including offer letters, background check submission, and submitting in the HR system

    + Consult with Director of Graduate Studies, the Graduate Committee, and graduate faculty on curricular revisions

    + Manage tuition remission information in the ARO Portal each fall and spring semester

    + Coordinate the scholarship and fellowship processes

    + Organize and produce event coordination for department events intended to integrate graduate students into the community (e.g., orientation) and enhance their networking and research profiles (e.g., colloquium)

    + Conduct and analyze graduate student exit surveys and/or interviews

    + Consult with the Director of Undergraduate Studies, the Undergraduate Committee, and faculty on curricular revisions

    + Coordinate undergraduate internship program
