    POSITION DESCRIPTION:

    The College has one Maintenance Mechanic I (Grade 12) position on the Michael J. Grant Campus.

    DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

    Under direct supervision of a Maintenance Mechanic III or higher, assists with the performing of a variety of carpentry work in the maintenance, repair and construction of structures and equipment made of wood or associated materials. Work assignments are initiated by oral instructions or written work orders and are checked during the course of and upon completion of the job by superiors.

    TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

    Assists in measuring, marking and arranging materials according to blueprint or oral direction; cuts and shapes materials such as wood, plastic, fiberglass and drywall with hand and power tools (i.e. chisels, planes, electric drills and saws); assists with the repairing and constructing of miscellaneous items or wooden structure such as wood benches, tables, cabinets, signs, etc.; assists with the repairing and replacing of floors, roofs, wall sidings, doors, and underpinnings; assists with the installation of partitions, walls, and doors; assists in the demolition of existing furniture systems, partition walls not exceeding 6” in depth; assist with the repair and installation of locks, door checks, sash cords, windows; assist with the erection of scaffolding; builds forms for pouring concrete; inspects wooden structures for safety of operation. Assists in the repair of door closers, door handles, saddles and related door items. Can work under the supervision of other trades performing entry level tasks, as needed.

    FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

    Good knowledge of the tools, techniques, and terminology associated with the carpentry trade; good knowledge of general mathematics; familiarity with the safety precautions of mechanical trades; ability to perform carpentry skills; ability to understand and follow simple oral and written instructions; ability to get along well with others; mechanical ability; manual dexterity; good eye and hand coordination; good sense of balance; physical condition commensurate with the duties of the position.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Either:

    + One (1) year of experience as a laborer and six (6) months of experience working under the direction of a Maintenance Mechanic III or higher; or,

    + A satisfactory equivalent combination of the above education or train­ing and experience as defined by the limits of (a).

    NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

    Depending on the nature of the assignment, at the time of appointment and during employment in this title, candidates may be required to possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the vehicle to be operated.

    HIRING SALARY:

    As per the Association of Municipal Employees contract, the starting biweekly salary is $1,383.

     

    The shift will be from 6:30am – 3:00pm, Monday through Friday. Shift/Days and Hours are subject to change.
