    Position Description:

    Employees in this position are responsible for augmenting a supervising physician's data gathering abilities to reach

    decisions and institute patient care plans. Provides health care services to patients under direction and responsibility of a Physician.

    Major/Essential Functions:

    + Responds to initial consult request from University Medical Center’s (UMC) emergency room, patient care floors, and intensive care units. Provides "orthopaedic focused" assessment of patient and communicates directly with attending and resident physicians as to finding and recommended treatment plan.

    + Will conduct hospital rounds, write orders and responds to request for orthopaedic consults on behalf of the orthopaedic surgeon(s). Will evaluate and clarify clinical conditions, formulate and implement a treatment or therapeutic plan for hospitalized patients, dictate discharge summaries, histories and physicals as required.

    + Performs procedures such as but not limited to, digital blocks, regional anesthesia and minimum outpatient surgical procedures such as but not limited to: tendon repair, wound closure, wound management, wound debridement, incision and drainage, needle biopsy, percutaneous pinning fractures, k-wire removal and hardware removal.

    + Participates in daily patient rounds with attending and resident physician teams. Orders and schedules laboratory studies and diagnostic procedures; explain necessity, preparation, nature and anticipated effects of scheduled diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to patients and or family members.

    + Carry out therapeutic procedures such as wound suturing, dressing changes, cast and splint application and removal. Clinician is to report progress to supervising physician. Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including but not limited to joint and bursa aspirations, closed reduction of fractures and dislocations, injections of joints, tendons, trigger points and bursa, as well as, brace, cast and splint applications.

    + Consistently completes required billing related documentation for his/her service according to M.P.I.P. regulations, state laws, while providing necessary documentation to substantiate all submitted claims. Utilizes prescriptive authority as allowed by the State of Texas Boards of Medicine, State Laws and Board of Nursing Examiners.

    + This clinician will routinely order, prescribe, dispense and administer medication, orthosis, orthotics, braces and other orthopaedic devices as may be allowed by state legislation. Documents all prescriptions per policy. Provides support and assistance to attending level orthopaedic surgeons for identified elective operative /surgical procedures in Operating Rooms.

    + May performs role of "First Assistant" to attending level surgeons (as required) when (W.B.A.M.C.) resident physicians are unavailable to staff surgical cases. Assist in surgery will include but not limited to first assist, deep and superficial tissue closures, application of appliances and any other action delegated by the surgeon. Will be responsible for completing all pre and or post operative requirements.

    + Ensures continued compliance with clinical and operational standards as prescribed by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma Level I Trauma Center verification standards.

    + Complies with all HIPPA requirements as well as hospital and university health sciences center policies and procedures. Current BLS Certification through American Heart Association or American Red Cross required.

    + Remains current with all licensure, certifications and mandatory compliances and training required of this position.

    + Adhere to all TTUHSCEP policies, procedures and processes (Regents Rules, TTUS, HSECEO OPs, etc.).

    + Personally demonstrate, display, and act in accordance with TTUHSCEP’s values (Service, Respect, Accountability, Integrity, Advancement, and Teamwork). Serve as a value's leader while actively promoting and encouraging staff across the institution.

    + Perform all other duties as assigned.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    + Current RN license in the state of Texas. Four to five years experience as Registered Nurse with relevant past experience in an operating room , surgical or orthopaedic specific patient care environment .

    + Current certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, (auditing of ) Advanced Trauma Life Support courses.

    + Current experience and certification as an Adult Nurse Practitioner or Family Nurse Practitioner. Previous "hands on" experience in application and manipulation of casting materials and splinting devices.

    + Two to four years experience as an Adult Nurse Practitioner working in a busy multi specialty orthopaedic group practice .

    + Five to eight years experience as Registered Nurse with relevant experience in a peri-operative \\\\ operating room environment, surgical or orthopaedic patient care units.

    + Certification, knowledge and hands on experience as an orthopaedic cast & splinting technician.

    + Current certification and two years "hands on" experience as a "first assistant" in a busy hospital based operating room environment.

    + Two years experience as and Orthopaedic Nurse Practitioner assigned to the "Trauma Response Team" in an A.C.S. verified Level I Trauma Center .

    Required Qualifications:

    + Graduation from a Physician Assistant's training program approved by the Council on Allied Health Education Accreditation of the American Medical Association

    + Current Physician Assistant license in the State of Texas or ability to transfer licensee to Texas

    + Certification as a Physician Assistant as evidenced by passing the examinations given by the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants OR Graduation from an accredited school of nursing as a nurse practitioner from an approved certification program recognized by the Texas Board of Nursing

    + Current R.N. license as approved by the Texas Board of Nursing or ability to transfer license to Texas. Certification as a Nurse Practitioner from an approved certification program as recognized by the Texas Board of Nursing or ability to transfer certification to Texas

    Licensure/certification

    + Current BLS Certification through American Heart Association or American Red Cross required.
