Description
Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA) is seeking a self-motivated team member who enjoys challenging and impactful work in the physical and computational sciences. This position is for an engineer or scientist with a background evaluating complex physics through modeling and simulation, as well as proficiency developing software applications. Join our team of engineers and scientists in an effort to deliver urgent capabilities needed by the Warfighter at the tactical edge to survive, fight, and win in a CBRNe (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive) operational environment. Tasks include data analysis, model development, integration with DoD software platforms, and design of novel decision support tools to study the potential impact of these threats on military and civilian populations.
Qualified candidates local to the Raleigh, NC area, are eligible to work a hybrid schedule. Qualified candidates not local to the Raleigh area may be eligible for remote work.
Selected candidates must be U.S. Citizens and may be subject to a government security investigation. Candidates must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.
What you’ll do as a Staff Scientist / Engineer:
+ The primary focus is on basic and applied research for chemical and biological (CB) defense and countering weapons of mass destruction (C-WMD). This includes researching and applying analytical methods to support warfighters operating in a CB, radiological, or nuclear (CBRN) environment and evaluating the effectiveness of C-WMD and CB defense capabilities.
+ The development and use of computational tools, as well as novel data analysis techniques is required to analyze fundamental phenomenology related to weapon effects and the resulting hazards.
Staff Scientist / Engineer Essential Functions:
+ Conduct scientific research using modeling and simulation to examine operational environments.
+ Develop, integrate, and optimize software applications that implement modeling and simulation capabilities.
+ Adapt to new requirements and manage time between multiple projects.
+ Work with a team to coordinate tasking and regularly communicate progress.
+ Contribute research and analysis findings to technical reports and presentations.
+ Interface with customers to present progress and identify future opportunities.
Staff Scientist / Engineer Requirements:
+ 5-7 years with a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or related.
+ Strong engineering, physics, or math background.
+ Strong technical writing and oral presentation skills.
+ Proficient with modern, object-oriented programming languages (e.g., Java, Kotlin, or C++) and build tools (e.g., Gradle, Maven).
+ Proficient with version control (e.g., Git) and CI/CD (e.g., GitLab) platforms.
+ U.S. Citizenship Required.
+ Must meet eligibility requirements to obtain a security clearance.
Staff Scientist / Engineer Preferences:
+ 0-2 years with a PhD or 3-5 years with a Masters.
+ Familiarity with modeling and simulation, data analysis, or DoD weapon effects codes.
+ Familiarity with native compilers (e.g., MSVC, GCC) and build tools (e.g., Make, CMake).
+ Familiarity with frontend languages (e.g., JavaScript) and build tools (e.g., NPM, Yarn).
+ Familiarity with multiple platforms (e.g., Windows, Linux, Android) and computer networking.
+ Familiarity with containers (e.g., Docker) and container orchestration (e.g., Helm, Kubernetes).
C** **ompany & Division Information
The Joint Forces are faced with an overwhelming task to anticipate chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN), as well as explosive threats, and deliver capabilities to defend against and defeat them. The nature of conflict, and these threats, is complex and diverse. Therefore, the science and technology (S&T) for core capabilities must continue to evolve. Modeling and simulation (M&S) are an effective way to study the potential impact of these threats on military and civilian populations, as well as explore tactics to respond to and recover from real events.
Our M&S, data, and tools enable the evaluation and delivery of urgent capabilities needed by the Warfighter at the tactical edge to survive, fight, and win in a CBRNe environment. This common core of M&S representing a DoD-accepted knowledgebase can be quickly leveraged or adapted to deliver leading-edge solutions that address current and emerging threats.
