Description:
The Cardiac Device Nurse plays a critical role in the comprehensive care of patients with implanted cardiac devices, including pacemakers, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs), and insertable cardiac monitors (ICMs). This position involves direct patient care, device interrogation and programming, patient education, and collaboration with cardiologists and other healthcare professionals to optimize patient outcomes. The ideal candidate will possess specialized knowledge in cardiac electrophysiology and a strong commitment to patient safety and education.
Key Responsibilities:
+ **Device Interrogation and Programming:**
+ Perform in-person and remote interrogations of pacemakers, ICDs, and ICMs according to established protocols and physician orders.
+ Analyze device data, including electrograms, trends, and diagnostic information, to identify arrhythmias, lead issues, and device malfunctions.
+ Program devices based on physician orders and patient needs, ensuring optimal device function and appropriate therapy delivery.
+ Document all device interrogations, programming changes, and patient responses accurately and thoroughly in the electronic health record (EHR).
+ **Patient Education and Support:**
+ Provide comprehensive education to patients and their families regarding their cardiac device, including its function, potential alarms, lifestyle modifications, follow-up schedules, and emergency protocols.
+ Address patient questions and concerns with empathy and clarity.
+ Monitor patient symptoms and device performance, providing guidance and escalating issues to the physician as needed.
+ **Clinic Operations:**
+ Schedule and coordinate in-person and remote device follow-up appointments.
+ Manage device alerts and transmissions from remote monitoring systems, triaging and escalating urgent findings to the cardiologist.
+ Assist with device recalls and advisories, ensuring timely patient notification and appropriate action.
+ Maintain device clinic equipment and inventory.
+ Collaborate with device company representatives for technical support, education, and access to new technologies.
+ **Collaboration and Communication:**
+ Work closely with cardiologists, electrophysiologists, medical assistants, and other clinic staff to ensure coordinated and efficient patient care.
+ Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
+ Participate in team meetings, quality improvement initiatives, and continuing education pertinent to cardiac device management.
+ **Documentation and Compliance:**
+ Maintain accurate, complete, and timely documentation of all patient encounters, device data, and communications in the EHR, adhering to clinic policies and regulatory standards.
+ Ensure compliance with all relevant policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements (e.g., HIPAA, JCAHO).
Qualifications:
+ **Education:** Graduate of an accredited school of nursing (BSN Preferred)
+ **Licensure:** Current, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license in Iowa
+ **Experience:** Minimum of 2 years of clinical nursing experience, with at least 1 year specifically in cardiac device management (pacemakers, ICDs, ICMs) in a clinic or hospital setting.
+ **Certifications:**
+ Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
+ Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred.
