    Join the Surgical Team at UPMC Shadyside – Part-Time Surgical Technologist Opportunity

     

    UPMC Shadyside is currently seeking a dedicated and skilled Part-Time Surgical Technologist to join our dynamic Operating Room team. This role offers a flexible schedule with a mix of day shifts (6:30 AM – 3:00 PM) and evening shifts (10:30 AM – 7:00 PM), with no on-call, weekend, or holiday requirements—giving you the work-life balance you deserve.

    Surgical Support Responsibilities:

    + Preoperative Duties:

    + Prepare operating room with surgical instruments, equipment, sterile drapes, and solutions.

    + Assemble and check both sterile and non-sterile equipment to ensure functionality.

    + Prepare patients by washing, shaving, and ensuring aseptic incision sites; transport and position them on the operating table, then apply sterile drapes.

    + Intraoperative Assistance:

    + Assist surgical team with sterile gowning and gloving.

    + Pass instruments and supplies to surgeons during procedures.

    + Handle retractors, cut sutures, manage sponges, and provide suctioning at the operative site.

    + Count instruments, needles, and sponges to maintain surgical safety.

    + Postoperative & Room Maintenance:

    + Transfer patients to recovery as needed.

    + Clean and restock the operating room after procedures.

    + Ensure a clean and safe environment, adhering to aseptic techniques and safety protocols.

    + Collaboration & Education:

    + Serve as a preceptor for students and new staff; share best practices and clinical knowledge.

    + Participate in interdisciplinary teams and committees.

    + Collaborate with clinicians to implement and disseminate new knowledge.

    + Specimen & Medication Handling:

    + Assist with care, labeling, and disposal of specimens for lab analysis.

    + Apply dressings as needed.

    + Ensure all medications are properly labeled and passed to the surgeon per protocol.

     

    Pennsylvania House Bill 81 Enacted: 10/29/2020 Effective: 12/27/2020

    Eligibility Requirements:

    + Minimum 2 years of current surgical technician experience demonstrating advanced knowledge of at least two surgical specialties, including but not limited to:

    + General, orthopedic, vascular, plastic/reconstructive, OB/GYN, thoracic, ophthalmic, neurosurgery, organ procurement, and endoscopic procedures.

    Additional Qualification Criteria (must meet one):

    + Completion of a program sponsored by a nationally recognized institutional or programmatic accreditation and maintains certification.

    + Completion of an appropriate military training program.

    + Maintains certification from an accredited program.

    + Was employed as a surgical technologist in a healthcare facility on or before 12/27/2020.

    + Was employed as a surgical technologist at another healthcare facility within two years prior to 12/27/2020.

    Exceptions:

    + A health care facility may employ individuals who do not meet certification requirements if:

    + A diligent and thorough effort has been made to employ a sufficient number of certified surgical technologists.

    + A written record of these efforts is created and retained at the facility.

    + _Note: All recruitment efforts are documented and available for record. The supply of certified or certification-eligible surgical technologists does not meet our needs._

    Continuing Education Requirements:

    + Certified individuals: Must comply with continuing education requirements specified by their credentialing organization.

    + Uncertified individuals: Must complete 30 hours of continuing education every two years.

     

    Certification, Licensure, and CPR/BLS Requirements

    Certifications:

    + Must hold Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Technologist Surgery-Certified (TSC).

    + CPR or Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within 30 days of hire, following AHA standards, including both didactic and skills demonstration components.

    Timing & Exceptions:

    + New Graduates from accredited programs may work for six months post-program completion prior to certification, but must be certified within that period.

    + Grandfathering Provisions apply:

    + Staff employed on or before 12/27/2020, or

    + Staff employed as a surgical technologist at another healthcare facility two years prior to 12/27/2020, are exempt from certification requirements.

    + Facilities may still hire uncertified individuals if:

    1. A diligent effort was made and documented.

    2. Supply shortages prevent meeting staffing needs with certified or certification-eligible personnel.
