    Position Summary:

    The Director of Sponsored Projects and Community Systems oversees a diverse staff of professionals responsible for the pursuit, award, and successful completion of millions of dollars’ worth of grants and contracts for the Center for Community Systems, a research and technical assistance center located in the Hillier College of Architecture and Design at the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, NJ.

    Essential Functions:

    -Supervises a diverse staff of professionals and student employees. Responsibilities include but are not limited to determining and prioritizing staff work tasks; developing and updating short-term and long-term plans for staff and student employee activities; supervising the day-to-day workload, actions, and progress of staff and student employees; serving as a resource to staff; and conducting the staff’s annual performance reviews.

     

    -Manages staff responsible for marketing and external communications activities, which include: creating and scheduling content for social media platforms, newsletters, and e-blasts; event planning and promotion; creating and maintaining program websites

     

    -Fosters and manages community relationships in order to initiate, implement, and occasionally conduct educational and engagement events (workshops, webinars, boot camps, conferences) in collaboration with technical staff.

     

    -Mentors technical staff in sustainability, resiliency, and community development-related research and planning projects; originate educational content (how-to videos, infographics, learning modules); conduct one-on-one technical assistance; share expertise and engage with the latest regulatory and technical innovations in sustainability/environmental and urban planning fields

     

    -Works collaboratively with the Director of Environmental Services to create and manage grant workplans.

     

    -Conducts technical work as required for the successful completion of a grant or contract. Such work may include serving as a subject matter expert and participating in community engagement and educational forums.

     

    -Assists the Executive Director in the management of grants and contracts. Responsibilities include preparation of work plans; completing and/or ensuring the completion of the funder’s required forms and progress reports; creating and managing project budgets; management of subcontractors (solicitations, selection, directing activities, invoicing, etc.); ensuring all requirements of the grants and contracts are adhered to and that the final products meet or exceed the funding sources’ expectations.

     

    -Conducts Business Development activities including but not limited to seeking grant opportunities; establishing networks and assembling multi-disciplinary project teams; preparation of proposals and project budgets; and presentations to potential funders.

     

    -Liaises with the Executive Director to make decisions for operational strategies and program strategic goals.

    Additional Functions:

    -Assists the Executive Director in staff and research student recruiting efforts, including determining the need for additional staff and research students and projecting workload; reviewing applicant resumes; conducting interviews; and determining the merits of each applicant.

     

    -Serves as subject matter expert as needed.

     

    -Performs other tasks as directed by the Executive Director.

    Prerequisite Qualifications:

    -Master’s degree in land use, sustainability or urban planning, Social Sciences, Landscape Architecture, Geography or other relevant interdisciplinary fields of study.

     

    -7-9 years of experience in the public and private sectors in collaborative social science research with community partners, oversight of grant management and procurement, program development, and organizational development, to include 3 plus years of managing staff and subcontractors.

     

    -Experience in originating and managing grants and contracts.

     

    -Experience in project management and program development.

     

    -Experience serving as a subject matter expert and conducting environmental social science research or designing collaborative research projects with faculty and external partners, including government, nonprofit and consulting companies. Experience in conducting assets and needs assessments, land use assessments, and visioning sessions is optional but preferred.

     

    -Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking.

     

    -Excellent organizational skills

    -At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.

    Salary Information:

    In compliance with the NJ Pay Transparency Law, the annual salary range for this position is $125,000-$150,000 (USD). NJIT considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as, market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. This pay range represents base pay only and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses or other items.
