Position Overview:

The Storage Systems Department (SSD), as part of the Scientific Computing Systems Division (SCS) within the Technology Innovation Directorate at SLAC, architects, deploys, and supports the multi-petabyte filesystems that SLAC¿s research facilities and experiments use for their data-intensive workflows and computing pipelines. The department is responsible for developing and supporting a range of storage needs for the data-centric HPC platforms and services using common shared infrastructure. The Scientific Computing Systems division provides both baseline infrastructure and services for the entire user community as well as for the specific needs of various experiments at SLAC, including the Linear Coherent Light Source (LCLS) and the LSST-Rubin observatory.

SSD has a broad range of storage technologies we support, including an all-flash Weka based filesystem, a tiering, Ceph object storage system - one of the largest ever deployments of Ceph, Lustre and GPFS-based filesystems, and tape-based archival systems. The department, in collaboration with other departments in SCS will ensure that these storage systems are reliable, provisioned appropriately and are available to users of the SLAC Shared Scientific Data Facility (S3DF).

The Department Head for SSD will lead the team of engineers and system administrators to deploy and maintain the storage resources. The Department Head will, in coordination with Division leadership, create a long-term strategy for how S3DF will support the needs of SLAC science. The Department Head is responsible for all storage resources that the Division provides to SLAC and for the vision and long-term strategy for ensuring that the storage needs of S3DF and the experiments we support are met, are stable and reliable.

Your specific responsibilities:

+ Manage a team of storage engineers and system administrators responsible for the architecture, deployment, operation and maintenance of a range of storage system solutions that the Scientific Computing Systems (SCS) division supports.

+ Develop and execute, along with the other SCS departments, a strategic vision for storage systems supporting SLAC's scientific computing needs

+ Design, implement, and maintain high-performance storage solutions for scientific data acquisition, processing, and long-term archival.

+ Collaborate closely with scientific divisions to understand evolving data storage requirements.

+ Work closely with and manage the relationship with vendor partners for the management and support of our storage resources.

+ Establish technical standards, best practices, monitoring, and operational procedures for the storage systems.

+ Work with the Infrastructure and Systems Services department on procurement, installation, and lifecycle management of storage hardware.

+ Ensure high availability, reliability, and security of storage systems that operate on a 24x7x365 basis.

+ Manage department staffing, and resource allocation and work with Division management to ensure budgetary needs are properly scoped and managed.

+ Work closely with other SCS departments to integrate storage solutions with computing and networking infrastructure.

+ Represent SCS, TID and SLAC to the Department of Energy (DOE), other national laboratory collaborations and external meetings related to scientific data storage.

To be successful in this position you will bring:

+ Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or related technical field

+ At least 8 years of experience in storage systems architecture and management

+ Demonstrated expertise with enterprise storage technologies, including high-performance file systems, object storage, and archival systems

+ Experience supporting scientific computing environments and research data management

+ Strong understanding of data protection, disaster recovery, and storage security practices

+ Proven track record of successful project management and team leadership

+ Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications:

+ Advanced degree in computer science, engineering or related technical field

+ 5 years of experience in leadership role

+ Experience with DOE or national laboratory environments preferred

+ Knowledge of high-performance computing and scientific workflows highly desirable
