Lead Test Systems Design Engineer – High Volume Products
The Lead Test Systems Design Engineer will design and develop automated test systems and test programs for design verification and high-volume production testing of electronic assemblies, ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards. This includes delivering stable uptime, accuracy, repeatability, and minimal cycle time to support manufacturing efficiency and optimize delivery timelines. The Design Engineer will also support integration of the test systems and data with the Manufacturing Execution System (MES), including development of visual management tools and dashboards to track metrics such as cycle time, yield, and Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE).
This role supports both design development and manufacturing operations, including:
-Designing new production test equipment for complex electronic products.
-Leading development of the test equipment through all phases of the project: Planning, Requirements, Architecture, Hardware/Software Design, Integration, Verification.
-Influencing overall test strategy & test data analytics for high-volume electronics manufacturing.
-Supporting next generation product design and test equipment platform developments and deployments.
As the end-product and test equipment transitions to production, the Lead Test Systems Design Engineer will be responsible for the following activities:
-Collaborating with the manufacturing team to resolve test equipment design defects with urgency
-Developing, maintaining, and enhancing manufacturing dashboards and analytics through test equipment connection with the MES
-Driving manufacturing lean improvements (e.g. yield, cycle time, up time, etc.)
This position is based in Grand Rapids, MI and necessitates a full-time presence in the office. An extensive corporate relocation package is also available for eligible candidates.
Job Description
Roles and Responsibilities:
+ Leads development of the test equipment through all phases of the project: Planning, Requirements, Architecture, Hardware/Software Design, Integration, Verification.
+ Understands manufacturing/assembly processes, production test philosophies and interactions with Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) and other business systems.
+ Collaborates with cross-functional teams to define test requirements and specifications, ensuring alignment with delivery and cost objectives.
+ Designs, develops, and maintains end-of-line test systems to ensure product functionality and quality. Generate test software, design electrical test hardware, and lead corresponding design reviews.
+ Partners with business stakeholders and IT teams to develop and implement solutions for integrating the test equipment with MES and business transactional systems.
+ Develops, maintains, and enhances visual management and data analytics tools to monitor test data and drive continuous improvement.
+ Analyzes test results to identify trends, anomalies, and potential issues, ensuring timely communication of findings to stakeholders.
+ Collaborates with design, manufacturing, and quality teams to ensure seamless integration of testing into the production process, optimizing delivery timelines.
+ Exhibits ownership for the test equipment through the full life cycle. Sits with and responds immediately to manufacturing issues related to the test equipment design or software.
+ Collaborates with manufacturing team using Lean tools to resolve problems.
+ Leads improvement activities to optimize test processes, reduce cycle times, enhance test coverage, and support cost-out initiatives.
+ Maintain detailed documentation for test procedures, equipment, and results to ensure traceability and compliance.
+ Trains operators and technicians on the proper use of test equipment and procedures.
+ Supports product and test equipment design changes for obsolescence management, product improvement, and cost-out activities.
Qualifications:
+ Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field from an accredited university or college.
+ 5+ years of professional experience developing automated test systems for complex electronic products, electrical systems design, or similar.
+ Software design experience with text-based languages such as C/C++/C# and Python.
+ Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, and wiring diagrams.
+ Understanding of military and industry specifications, standards, and federal aviation regulations as they apply to the development of electronic equipment.
+ Demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve problems.
+ Strong oral and written communication skills.

Desired Characteristics:
+ Experience with processor-based electronics hardware, especially with respect to test and diagnostics.
+ Proficiency in software development using National Instruments TestStand, C/C++/C#, LabWindows/CVI.
+ Experience with data communication protocols such as RS-232, RS-422, and Ethernet TCP/IP.
+ In-depth knowledge of automated test engineering disciplines and methodologies.
+ Analysis experience with mechanical design, integrated electronics, and circuit card assemblies.
+ Experience with test system design and development for integrated electronics and circuit card assemblies.
+ Experience with development or integration of systems with the Manufacturing Execution System or other business management systems.
+ Experience developing visual management and data analytics tools and dashboards from machine data.
+ Experience with high volume electronics manufacturing and end-of-line testing.
+ Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems and deliver results.
+ Familiarity with aerospace standards and manufacturing processes.
+ Self-starter who takes ownership of product line and is committed to continuous improvement initiatives.
+ Strong oral and written communication skills.
+ Attention to detail.

The base pay range for this position is $90,800.00 - 121,100.00 USD Annual. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, and skill set. This position is also eligible for an annual discretionary bonus based on a percentage of your base salary/ commission based on the plan. This posting is expected to close on 8/01/2025.
