Academic Program Specialist (Assistant Director of New Student Programs)

Reporting to the Director of New Student Programs, the Assistant Director of New Student Programs is responsible for managing a large team of undergraduate peer mentors, mentor coaches, and executive peer mentors to support new student adjustment and success. The Assistant Director plays a pivotal role in enhancing the student success infrastructure through integrated peer mentoring. Additionally, the Assistant Director will create opportunities that foster a sense of belonging and interconnectedness among peer mentors and new students, supporting the College’s initiatives to enrich the first-year experience. Primary responsibilities of this position include assisting the Director in planning, developing, and implementing new student program initiatives; performing administrative, timekeeping, and budget tasks; selecting, training, and supervising peer mentors for the First Year Seminar and Transfer Student Network; and assisting with Week of Welcome activities, Student Convocation, and Commencement.
Other responsibilities for this position include:
+ Recruit, hire, train, schedule, and supervise a diverse team of undergraduate peer mentors, mentor coaches, and executive peer mentors for the First Year Seminar and Transfer Student Network.
+ Manage the peer mentor community to ensure effective support for new students.
+ Support the development, implementation, and assessment of curricula that support student acclimation and success.
+ Design and lead workshops aimed at welcoming new students, supporting their transition to Baruch, and setting them up for academic and personal success.
+ Provide individualized and group coaching to peer mentors to enhance their effectiveness.
+ Support operations for orientation, convocation, and other new student programs.
+ Perform administrative, timekeeping, and budget tasks related to program management.
+ Maintain records for tracking budget expenditures and managing student staff time sheets.
+ Assist in the collection and analysis of departmental assessment and student satisfaction data to inform program improvements.
+ Be knowledgeable of on-campus support services available to students and provide assistance and referrals to students at risk and those facing barriers in their transition to Baruch College.
+ Promote the services of the Office of New Student Programs at student orientations, resource fairs, and other recruitment events.
+ Serve on departmental and divisional committees and task forces as needed.
+ Be available and flexible to work evening and weekend hours as required to support student needs and program activities.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree and four (4) years of related experience required.
Must be a current CUNY employee
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration or Student Affairs.
+ Experience training and/or teaching in a college setting.
+ Prior experience managing opportunity programs or peer-to-peer education initiatives.
+ Familiarity with assessment and best practices in retention and student development theory and practice.
+ Demonstrated ability to navigate and implement initiatives within the City University of New York systems, policies, and procedures.
+ Proven track record of overcoming challenges and driving projects to completion.
+ Strong commitment to supporting student success and fostering an inclusive environment.
+ Strong communication, interpersonal, managerial, and administrative skills.
+ Ability to work in a fast-paced, complex environment.
+ Strong computer skills in Excel, PowerPoint, Qualtrics, Teams, SharePoint, and Zoom.
+ Prior experience leading peer mentorship and college transition programs.
CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW
Participates in the daily coordination of academic and administrative activities of a College's specialized academic program under management direction.
- Supports program development, student service delivery, outcome evaluation and instructor/student recruitment, enrollment, and retention.
- Recommends, implements and evaluates strategies to expand program offerings
- Prepares analytical and statistical reports for management
- Develops and maintains relationships with various College offices to improve student and faculty services
- Serves as resource expert regarding program policies and procedures
- Oversees office recordkeeping; manages updates of program web and print materials
- May supervise office operations and/or department budget
- Performs related duties as assigned.

$75,465- $82,928; Salary commensurate with education and experience.
