Sarasota County’s Planning & Development Services department is seeking a Contractor Licensing Specialist to join our team! This is an advanced professional role within the Building Division’s Licensing and Enforcement section, where you’ll lead initiatives, support policy development, and help shape contractor licensing operations. You’ll work directly with the Deputy Building Official, coordinate licensing activities, conduct research, prepare detailed reports and case files, and ensure compliance with State Statutes, county ordinances, and internal policies.

    About the Position

     

    In this role, you will...

     

    + Oversee all contractor licensing operations for Sarasota County, including registrations, applications, and insurance documentation.

    + Accept and process contractor licensing applications via multiple channels and input data into the permitting system.

    + Verify fees and licensing requirements per ordinances and policies, and make decisions accordingly.

    + Educate staff and the public on licensing procedures and policies.

    + Handle inquiries, monitor emails, maintain licensing records, and respond to public requests.

    + Provide technical information and administrative support to the Building and Deputy Building Officials.

    + Support General and Mechanical Licensing Boards, prepare and present cases, and manage related correspondence and scheduling.

    + Assist in ordinance implementation, budget planning, and development of licensing communications.

    + Attend statewide licensing meetings, prepare reports, and assist with permitting and administrative duties when needed.

     

    About the Schedule

    Work Hours:

    + Full-time, 40 hours per week.

    + Typical Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. ( no weekends! )

     

    As a reminder, all county employees are considered essential and must be prepared to protect and support the community and its citizens. Each employee, without exception, will have a duty assignment and be required to work during a disaster or declared emergency.

     

    About You

    To be considered for this role, you must have the following:

    + Associate degree from an accredited college or university with three (3) years of job-related experience.

    + Or Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a job-related field with one year of job-related experience.

    + Or Five (5) years of professional job-related experience can be substituted for the degree (at management discretion).

    + Must be a Florida notary or willing to become a notary within six (6) months of hire.

    + Valid Florida driver's license by date of hire.

    The ideal candidate has the following knowledge, skills, and/or abilities:

    + Has 2 (or more) years experience in contractor licensing and permitting.

    + Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, professionalism, and the ability to effectively communicate policies and procedures to diverse audiences.

    + Skilled in organizing, interpreting, and presenting complex information, including legal, regulatory, and financial data.

    + Capable of using sound judgment while working independently or as part of a team, including on sensitive or cross-functional issues.

    + Proficient in contractor licensing laws, compliance standards, ordinances, and resolutions at the County, State, and Federal levels.

    + Experienced with Microsoft Office and able to learn permitting systems like Land Information Management and budgeting tools (such as GovMax).

     

    Physical Demands: Employees in this role must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 lbs.

    About Everything Else

    Starting Pay Range: $53,456.00 - $57,096.00, based on experience.
