    The Department of **Laboratory Medicine and Pathology** has two outstanding opportunities for **Clinical Laboratory Technician 1's** on Fixed Duration Appointments. Under general supervision, this position performs simple and qualitative clinical laboratory tests and/or prepare/setup specimens for laboratory tests and other laboratory work in support of technologists, faculty and students. This position's primary focus is directed toward pre-analytical handling and processing of patient specimens for diagnostic testing.

    WORK SCHEDULE

    + 40 hours per week (Full-Time)

    + Lots of free fitness, healthy eating, finance, and stress reduction classes offered through the Whole U. **REQUIREMENTS:** High school graduation or equivalent AND one year of chemical, clinical, or public health laboratory experienceORCompletion of a laboratory assistant course approved by the American Society of Clinical PathologistsOREquivalent education/experience. **DEPARTMENT REQUIREMENTS:**

    + Completion of a phlebotomy course

    + Medical Assistant - Phlebotomy (MA-P) certification with the WA State Department of Health **RESPONSIBILITIES:**

    + Prepare patient and collection equipment according to established procedures for blood collection

    + Perform phlebotomy on patients of all ages including both inpatients and outpatients

    + Instruct patients on proper collection of urine specimens

    + Match patients ID against patient’s information in Sunquest Collect handheld devices to ensure positive patient ID

    + Review Sunquest collect for appropriate collection of tube typeInteract professionally with patients, their families, departmental and hospital staff

    + Sort and prioritize initial specimens and requests, receive specimens via pneumatic tube system and Specimen Processing front window

    + Under general supervision, performs simple and qualitative clinical laboratory tests and/or prepare/setup specimens for laboratory tests and other laboratory work in support of technologists, faculty and students

    + Responsible for receiving processing and distribution of routine and stat specimens for analytical testing

    + Centrifuge and aliquot appropriate specimen type and quantity as ordered

    + Operates laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, incubators, scales and loads specimens onto automated instrumentation (chemistry and hematology automated lines

    + Process timed urine collections: add preservatives, measure, aliquot, etc.

    + Assist in orientation, training and support of new employees

    + Refer to testing to other laboratories as procedurally necessary

    + Scan requisitions into lab On-base system

    + Maintain and regular maintenance on lab equipment

    + Clean work area at least once each shift

    + Answer telephones, intercom and window reception in a courteous and professional manner

    + Perform computer functions required for completion of tasks: data entry, printing, worksheets, reports, result inquiry

    + Respond to inquiries concerning patient lab values, reference ranges, specimen requirements, procedures, time required for tests and preparation of specimens to outside labs for analysis

    + Resolve specimen or order-related problems

    + Communicate courteously and clearly with hospital and laboratory staff to resolve problems

    + Perform computer functions required for completion of tasks: data entry of patient information and tests requested, printing, worksheets, reports, result inquiry, etc.

    + Attend division and department staff meetings

    + Promote and contribute to the development of teamwork in the service and working relationships between the laboratory and other departments

    + Complete compliance, safety and other training relevant to job functions assigned

    + Participates in performance improvement activities and supports the hospital in meeting JCAHO CLIA and CAP accreditation standards. Communicate courteously and clearly with hospital and laboratory staff to resolve problems

    + Employees working in Laboratory Medicine may be required to work in other departmental locations in order to meet patient service requirements, i.e. UWMC, HMC, CHRMC, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, SCCA, Roosevelt etc.

    + Lab Medicine employees are considered essential staff and as such are required to report to work during inclement weatherUW Medicine includes Harborview Medical Center, UW Medical Center - Montlake, UW Medical Center - Northwest, Valley Medical Center, UW Neighborhood Clinics, UW Physicians, UW School of Medicine, and Airlift Northwest.
