Senior Advisor for Academic Affairs Messaging and Strategic Outreach
POSITION DETAILS
The Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and University Provost (EVC/UP) provides strategic academic leadership across The City University of New York’s (CUNY) 25 institutions, overseeing academic policies, 1,400+ programs, and key initiatives that enhance academic quality, student success, and equitable access to education.
Reporting to the EVC/UP and partnering closely with CUNY’s Office of Communications and Marketing (OCM), the Senior Advisor for Academic Affairs Messaging and Strategic Outreach serves as a key advisor to the EVC/UP, overseeing executive messaging and internal communications for the Office of Academic Affairs (OAA).
This role develops and implements comprehensive internal communication frameworks and marketing strategies to enhance the visibility and impact of OAA initiatives. The Senior Advisor manages a team responsible for program communications and content development, ensuring that messaging aligns with institutional priorities and reaches key audiences effectively.
In addition to the CUNY Title Overview information, other key duties include, but will not be limited to the following in close partnership with the CUNY Office of Communications and Marketing:
+ Serve as the lead speechwriter and content strategist for the EVC/UP and senior OAA leaders, crafting speeches, remarks, op-eds, testimonies, presentations, and key correspondence.
+ Oversee research and writing reports, proposals, and briefings on strategic initiatives.
+ Develop and implement internal communication frameworks and executive messaging strategies.
+ Create and manage OAA’s critical communication response, as needed.
+ Create and chair the OAA Communications Team comprised of communications (writers, designers, social media) and marketing staff across OAA offices/divisions to identify priorities, common goals and marketing needs.
+ Collaborate with OCM to align messaging, strengthen partnerships, and address branding needs and positioning strategies for programs, to ensure consistency across all materials, digital platforms, and public outreach efforts.
+ Supervise the creation of promotional materials, newsletters, website content, and digital media campaigns in collaboration with OAA designers, content creators, and digital media specialists to enhance the reach and effectiveness of University marketing efforts.
+ Analyze internal communication metrics to assess and refine strategies.
+ Maintain discretion in managing sensitive or confidential matters and assignments while engaging with senior leadership on key initiatives.
+ Serve as a special invitee to the EVC/UP’s cabinet, providing guidance on internal communications and strategic messaging.
+ Ensure that all communications and marketing initiatives connected to OAA reflect the values and priorities of the University and its leadership, while maintaining a consistent and unified voice across all audiences and platforms.
+ Perform related duties as assigned.
**NOTES** :
1. Until further notice, this position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule.
2. This position is excluded from union representation in the collective bargaining unit.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum:
Bachelor's Degree and eight years' related experience required.
Preferred:
+ Master’s degree in English, journalism, public relations, communications, marketing, or a related field.
+ Extensive experience in professional writing, including executive communications and/or speech writing.
+ Demonstrated ability to collaborate on development of strategic messaging initiatives across multiple platforms, including digital content and social media strategies.
+ Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling abilities, with expertise in adapting messaging for different audiences.
+ Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to translate complex topics into clear, compelling narratives.
+ Strong interpersonal and leadership skills to collaborate effectively with senior executives, faculty, and stakeholders.
CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW
Develops, implements, and oversees College-wide marketing plans to achieve institutional goals.
- Designs and executes a comprehensive strategic plan for marketing, advertising and communications
- Develops overall advertising and media strategies to achieve image, awareness, enrollment, recruiting, and/or fundraising goals
- Provide professional and managerial oversight of a broad range of marketing programs and tools, including digital, print, mail, broadcast, social networking, and other media
- Manages and develops internal staff and external resources
- Develops and analyzes key metrics of marketing effectiveness, as well as budgets and costs related to marketing programs and campaigns
- Performs related duties as assigned.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
The salary range is **$124,656 to $132,987** , commensurate with credentials, education, and experience.
CUNY is in the process of implementing salary schedule increases. Once implemented, salaries of eligible employees will be adjusted by 6.09% with additional increases of 3.25% effective 9/1/2025 and 3.5% effective 9/1/26, in accordance with the terms of the PSC-CUNY collective bargaining agreement.
