Responsibilities
Provides organization, coordination and leadership to all services and activities within the Forensic Nursing Program including, but not limited to the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) program, Domestic Violence, Elder Abuse and Human Trafficking. Responsibilities include the development, implementation, and evaluation of the Forensic Nursing program, recruitment, hiring, and orientation of staff, and management and improvement of the quality of care received by patients of violent crimes through direct and indirect patient care.
* Coordinates management across the continuum of care including planning and implementation of clinical protocols and practice management guidelines, monitoring care of in-hospital patients, and serving as a resource for clinical practice.
* Acts as an expert clinician/practitioner for a select population of patients and as a resource to the Forensic team nurses and to clinical staff within the organization and member hospitals to ensure best practice, quality and safety outcomes.
* Collaborates with the local Sexual Assault Resource Team (SART) and encourages SANE participation on local SART teams.
* Communicates, educates and interacts with various children’s advocacy and trauma programs and systems within DH.
* Manages the operational, personnel and financial aspects of the program. Represents Forensic Nursing on internal and external committees.
* Recruits, hires and supervises staff and develops, delivers and maintains the orientation and education of all forensic staff nurses.
* Develops and maintains departmental policies related to the SANE program, domestic violence and human trafficking.
* Leads quarterly business meetings to provide updates and disseminates all necessary information as well as quarterly Case/Peer Review Meetings to allow and encourage ongoing education for nurse examiners.
* Prepares and participates in monthly call schedule in collaboration with all forensic nurses.
* Provides for intra-facility, local EMS and regional professional staff development, participates in case review, implements practice guidelines, and directs community education and prevention programs to strengthen comprehensive, coordinated care for sexual assault victims, domestic violence, elder abuse and human trafficking.
* Provides orientation to all newly hired nurses on their role in caring for sexual assault patients.
* Monitors clinical processes and outcomes and system issues related to the quality of care provided. Develops quality indicators, audits and case reviews. Identifies trends and sentinel events. Helps outline remedial actions while maintaining confidentiality and makes recommendations for program improvement to leadership.
* Develop resources, as needed, to assist medical providers in recognition and implementing best practices in serving sexual assault victims, elder abuse, domestic violence and human trafficking.
* Attends various meetings relating to local and state level regulation of Forensic Nursing programs.
* Performs other duties as required or assigned.
Qualifications
* Graduate from an accredited Nursing Program required.
* Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (BSN) completed within 2 years of hire
* 3 years of experience as a SANE nurse required.
* Completion of approved “Sexual Assault Examiner Training” course required.
Required Licensure/Certifications
- Licensed Registered Nurse with NH eligibility
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certificate required.
- PALS within 6 months of hire or transfer
- Board certification by the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) as a SANE-A (Adolescent/Adult Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) and SANE-P (Pediatric Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) required.
- Trauma Nurse Core Course within one year of hire.
