The Montana Historical Society (MTHS) seeks an energetic and talented IT professional for the full-time position of IT Database Administrator. We are growing – creating a world-class Heritage Center that will be a destination, a gathering place, and a space to tell the stories of Montana to all. We are looking for an individual that will contribute to that mission by offering the public exciting and innovative ways to experience Montana’s history. The ideal candidate is a motivated team member who loves supporting MTHS’s programs with valuable IT work, embraces the position’s role in managing data assets throughout their lifecycle, from collection to consumption, to accomplish the mission of MTHS and is excited to be a part of the behind-the-scenes IT efforts that support the Montana Heritage Center opening in December 2025 and the ongoing operations of the MTHS. *Function:*The Information Technology office is one of six sections within the Administration Program of MTHS. Under the direction of the IT Systems Administrator, this position shares responsibility for MTHS’s many IT activities and will be responsible for the design, implementation, and maintenance of the structures, processes, and policies related to the data framework used to support the needs of the agency. These activities include database management, data transformation, data analysis, data analytics, data mapping, data security, privacy, and governance. Among other tasks, the ability to embrace and have enthusiasm for new MTHS technology, have great time management skills, along with a welcoming and friendly attitude, is important to this position. *Representative Duties:* * *Database Administration:*Inventory, plan, analyze, design, implement, test, secure, monitor, maintain, and document databases according to applicable policies, rules, regulations, and procedures. * *Data Analytics:*Clean, transform, and integrate data in an easy-to-understand consumable format for reporting and visualization. Provide guidance for setting metrics. Resolve data discrepancies and provide data analysis support as needed. * *Governance:*Ensure all databases are designed and configured in accordance with the enterprise data model. Participate in enterprise initiatives and work groups. Collaborate with business teams to ensure IT meets the business objectives related to data. Create, follow, and enforce applicable policies, rules and regulations. Document internal processes and procedures. *Knowledge of:* * Database management principles with a solid understanding of relational and spatial database concepts. * Database design, modeling, and data flow infrastructure. * Cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) and their implications for data storage, processing, and analytics. * Data formats such as CSV, JSON and XML. SQL and Python scripting language. * SQL Server Reporting Services and Report Builder/Designer * Technologies such as Snowflake for handling large volumes of data, including databases, data warehouses, data lakes, and stream processing. * Advanced knowledge of Excel utilizing pivot tables and macros. * Policies, standards, and best practices for ensuring data quality, integrity, security, privacy, and compliance. * Managing Personally Identifiable Information (PII) and how to apply data anonymization techniques including data redaction, nulling, masking, pseudonymization, generalization, swapping, perturbation, and encryption to protect sensitive data. *Skills in:* * Operation in the use of computer hardware and software. * Organizational skills and attention to detail. * Analysis and problem resolution *Ability to:* * Communicate complex ideas clearly and concisely both oral and written form. * Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, the media, and the public. * Act independently or as a member of a team. * Adjust to changing circumstances and new information. * Compile data from various sources, using ETL processing techniques and configuring API integrations. * Handle structured, unstructured, and geospatial data. *Minimum Physical/Mental Requirements:* * May require 8 or more hours a day working with IT systems. * May require more than a 40-hour workweek and on-call to perform systems upgrades and address issues during off-hours. * Occasional need to lift, move and install computer hardware – up to 25 lbs. * May require occasional contact with the public. *Education:* * Associate degree emphasizing basic database management principles. *Experience:* * Two years of experience managing, maintaining, and securing database systems. * Experience working on at least one digital transformation project including data migration. * Other combinations of education, certification or experience may be substituted. *Preferred Experience:* * SQL and Access database management * ESRI GIS geodatabase management related to mapping * Data analytics tools such as Tableau or Microsoft Power BI. *The following documents must be submitted to be considered for this position (be sure to mark each attachment as relevant):* * *Cover Letter* * *Resume* * *State of Montana Application (online)* *This position is open until filled.
