*The Parker Lab in the Department of Neurosurgery*at University of Maryland Baltimore (School of Medicine) is currently seeking a/contractual/*Laboratory Research Assistant*. The Parker lab will focus on understanding the basic mechanisms of neurodevelopmental epileptic disorders to develop targeted therapies for patients, including preventative interventions. The Parker Lab investigations will include conditions such as focal cortical dysplasia, STXBP1 encephalopathy, and mTOR pathway-associated disorders, all responsible for early-onset epilepsy in the pediatric population. We will use patient-derived neuron models for immunocytochemical staining, protein quantification, and multielectrode array measures of cell function and response to treatment. Additionally, we will perform fetal mouse surgeries with in utero electroporation to assess the impact of patients’ genetic mutations on early neuronal migration. Ultimately, we intend to translate our bench work into early interventional therapeutic trials for patients, including fetal treatments, with the goal of preventing the development of epilepsy rather than treating its consequences. The qualified candidate will be responsible for growing and maintaining cell lines, differentiating stem cells, performing in utero electroporation mouse survival surgeries and anesthesia, caring for mouse colonies, preparing brain tissue slides, analyzing data, preparing figures, and writing manuscripts, among other responsibilities.
