The Genetic Counselor Assistant will be part of a healthcare team dedicated to providing information and support to families with hereditary cancer syndromes.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
+ Interact with patients and their families to gather medical histories and provide information about the services and procedures offered.
+ Triage incoming referrals from providers, obtaining and documenting personal and family medical histories using standard pedigree nomenclature, tracking genetic testing orders, and disclosing negative genetic testing results.
+ Draw pedigrees both manually and electronically
+ Coordinate scheduling of patients for visits, conduct qualitative interviews by completing review of medical records and capturing data in a standardized database of analysis.
+ Calculating risk assessments (i.e. Tyrer-Cuzick, Bayes Mendel (BRCAPro, MMRPro, PancPro, MelaPro), Gail, Claus)
+ Prepare test requisition forms, insurance forms, letters of medical necessity, testing update forms
+ Obtain and ship samples to testing laboratory and/or escort patient from genetics office to lab for blood draw
+ Perform various administrative and clerical duties and assist with tasks such as preparing letters and maintaining patient medical records
+ Document correspondence with healthcare provider
+ Act as primary correspondence with genetic test labs to follow up on test results and provide missing documentation.
+ Other duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
Sitting up to 6 hours/day; 1hour at a time. Standing up to 1 hour/day, 10 minutes at a time. Walking up to 3 hours/day, 10 minutes at a time. Continually use fingers and hands to manipulate objects. Frequently lift and carry objects up to 10 lbs. Must be able to hear as it relates to normal conversation. Must be able to see as it relates to general, near, far, color, peripheral and depth perception. Needs to be able to use eyes to focus on the same object throughout the day. Work is typically performed in an office or clinic environment. Some travel within the network may be required.
EDUCATION:
High School degree or equivalent experience required. Genetic Counselor Assistant Training Program certification from an accredited program required or obtained within 12 months of hire. Graduate of accredited Medical Assistant program or two years similar experience preferred.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
One-year post-certification experience preferred but accepting new graduates. Familiarity with genetics and genetic concepts. Prior experience in genetic counseling or clinical settings.
