    The Division of Cardiology is seeking a **_Research Specialist II_** for a laboratory investigating the role of candidate gene mutations in thrombosis and hemostasis. Under the general supervision of a faculty investigator the Research Specialist II will independently perform routine and esoteric assays in the investigation of the effect of various genetic mutations on thrombosis. The person in this position will be expected to organize and present data to the faculty investigator. Responsibilities also include contributing to the general maintenance of the laboratory, equipment, and supplies.

    Specific Duties and Responsibilities

    + Follow established procedures and utilize appropriate technique to perform experiments associated with investigating the role of candidate gene mutations in thrombosis and hemostasis.

    + Perform gene expression assays and assist in molecular cloning experiments.

    + Maintain human endothelial and hepatocyte cell lines and execute cell-based assays and experiments.

    + Perform standard protein assays to determine the effects of experimental manipulations on target protein levels.

    + Assist in small animal model husbandry and experiments.

    + Be familiar with basic laboratory techniques such as pipetting, buffer and reagent preparation, pH determination, qPCR, RT-qPCR, western blotting, ELISA spectrophotometric absorbance determination and fluorescence detection.

    + Operate basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuge, pH meter, analytical balance, scintillation counter, light and/or fluorescence microscope, microplate reader, plate washer and biological safety cabinet.

    + May also utilize sophisticated instrumentation, spectrophotometer, thermal cycler, flow cytometer, and laboratory automation solutions/robotics.

    + Responsible for operation of lab computers for data entry.

    + Maintain accurate data records and laboratory notebook.

    + Maintain and make necessary adjustments to equipment, e.g. calibrating, alignment.

    + Prepare solutions, reagents, and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures.

    + Along with the laboratory supervisor, develop and institute standard operating procedures.

    + Demonstrate proficiency in both written and verbal scientific communication.

    Minimum Qualifications

    + Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.

    + Two years laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.

    + Proficiency in standard biochemistry and cellular and molecular biology experimental techniques.

    + Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond HS Diploma/Graduation Equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

    Preferred Qualifications

    + Prior small animal research experience

    Starting Salary Range: $41,300 - $72,300 Annually ($42,000 targeted; Commensurate w/exp.)

     

    Employee group: Full Time

     

    Schedule: M-F, 9:30 AM - 6:00 PM

     

    FLSA Status: Exempt

    The listed salary range represents the minimum and maximum Johns Hopkins University offers for this position, based on a good faith estimate at the time of posting. Actual compensation will vary depending on factors such as location, skills, experience, market conditions, education, and internal equity. Not all candidates will qualify for the highest salary in the range.
