Position Description
Texas State University invites applications for the position of Director of theSchool of Social Work (https://www.socialwork.txst.edu/) . The position includes a concurrent appointment as a faculty member at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. Applicants at Associate Professor rank will be considered based on their potential to achieve promotion to Professor rank at the time of hire. The successful applicant will receive the appropriate rank and title based on University and departmental established standards.
The Director (a 12-month position) is the chief executive officer of the School of Social Work and is responsible to the Dean of the College of Applied Arts. The School has more than 500 students (Pre-majors, BSWs, and MSWs), 31 full-time faculty, 9 adjuncts, and 6 professional staff members.
The School of Social Work ( SSW ) is a vibrant unit of the College of Applied Arts. It offers both the Bachelor of Social Work ( BSW ), which prepares students to engage in generalist social work practice and the Master of Social Work ( MSW ), which prepares students to engage in advanced specialized social work practice using a generalist framework. Both of these degree programs are fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.
The School of Social Work at Texas State has long been committed to preparing social workers to engage competently with those clients who are most forgotten in our society: these are the clients who are typically served by public agencies. Not only are the School’s graduates well-prepared to deal effectively with the most marginalized populations, but they are also quite competent in working with a broad spectrum of clients, other professionals, policy-makers, and organizations. A key component to their preparation is the School’s extensive network of public and private agencies, both rural and urban, in which students are placed for field practicum.
The Director is expected to exercise vision and leadership in scholarly activities, faculty development, curriculum, and professional service, placing emphasis on collaboration, community engagement, and the continuing development and maintenance of outstanding on-campus and online programs in the undergraduate and graduate programs. The Director has a special obligation to ensure that the School of Social Work is upholding its mission of preparing culturally responsive, advocacy-focused, ethical social workers. This obligation extends to upholding core values of the social work profession and CSWE competencies. The Director is responsible for the following daily administrative oversight and management tasks:
+ Academic and administrative leadership in the school
+ Recruitment, retention, and evaluation of distinguished faculty who bring varied backgrounds, perspectives, and a commitment to institutional excellence
+ Promotion of professional development for faculty and staff
+ Promotion of a supportive student learning environment that maintains academic rigor and offers a professional training environment for students conducive to professional growth and success
+ Increasing student enrollment while seeking to balance admissions with available resources per CSWE accreditation standards
+ Increasing scholarly and grant activity
+ Providing high-quality instructional programs
+ Managing multiple programs including programs at the San Marcos and Round Rock campuses
+ Ensure ongoing compliance and maintenance of accreditations and accreditation standards
+ Advising, recruitment, and retention of students from a variety of backgrounds
+ Facilitation of strategic planning
+ Preparation, monitoring, and execution of the departmental budget
+ Oversight of curriculum and student degree plans
+ Effective collaboration with campus stakeholders
+ Effective collaboration with community stakeholders
+ Resource development activities
Required Qualifications
1. A Master of social work degree from a Council on Social Work Education [ CSWE ]-accredited program with; an earned doctorate degree in Social Work, Social Welfare, or a related field from an accredited program(s); and at least 10 years of experience in undergraduate and graduate social work education.
2. Evidence of successful administrative leadership experience to include: (a) a strong track record of supervision and an ethical, participatory, and transparent management style that encourages, empowers, and develops faculty and staff yet provides critical evaluative feedback; (b) a demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with and promote a supportive and collegial environment among faculty, staff, and students; c) demonstrated successful experience with strategic planning, budget management, and scheduling of classes.
3. Demonstrated administrative experience developing new revenue streams including resource development and solicitation of grants and contracts to ensure adequate program resources.
4. Demonstrated ability to effectively interact and communicate with stakeholders in the University as well as national, state, and local community, alumni, donors, and external funding sources.
4. Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with CSWE reaffirmation of accreditation.
5. An established record of quality teaching, scholarship, and service activities, and evidence of ongoing, current high-quality activity in these areas at the level of Associate or Professor.
6. The successful applicant will receive the appropriate rank and title based on university and department established standards.
For the rank of Professor:Must meet the requirements for the rank of Professor for the School of Social Work at Texas State University.
For the rank of Associate Professor:Must meet the requirements for the rank of Associate Professor for the School of Social Work at Texas State University, and be eligible for promotion to full professor at the time of hire per university/social work policy.
Preferred Qualifications
1. Experience with distance education technologies/instructional modalities.
2. Demonstrated commitment to engaging the community and fostering productive relationships with alumni and donors.
3. Evidence of skill working collaboratively with University and community-based stakeholders, to articulate and accomplish the School’s mission of leadership for change in the public sector.
4. Evidence of administrative experience with an emerging, comprehensive, graduate degree-conferring university.
5. Experience with academic program development, especially with doctoral program development.
6. Experience seeking large grants with national scope.
7. Evidence of knowledge about and experience with issues and trends of national importance.
8. Experience navigating university systems.
9. Experience developing advisory boards for funding and program development.
10. Licensure at the LMSW or LCSW level, and/or potential to obtain licensure in Texas.
11. Two years post-graduate practice experience.
