Position summary: The SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) intern is located in the Senior Dining Department which is comprised of 65 staff. Catholic Charities Senior Dining provides healthy, nutritious meals to persons age 60 and over, helping seniors get well and stay well. Meals are intended for seniors 60 or older with a special emphasis on individuals who are low income (at or below poverty line), in need of nutritional support, and have difficulty preparing or shopping for their own meals.

Major responsibilities:

• Visit dining sites at least one time a quarter to educate diners about SNAP.

• Offer application assistance.

• Attend outreach events to provide information about SNAP and how CC’s Senior Dining can help with the application process.

• Assist seniors in reviewing the SNAP application and answer any questions a client may have.

• Follow-up on referrals.

• Items assigned by SNAP Coordinator.

Qualifications/Requirements:

• Students needing to complete a 40 hour plus internship to obtain their Undergraduate Degree in a Gerontology/Nursing.

• Be pursuing post-secondary education; preferably Gerontology/Nursing, etc.

• Capability to work independently as some projects will require initiative and independent action with general supervision on an outcome basis.

• Ability to work with others and be a contributing member of the team.

• Write clearly and concisely.

• Strong interpersonal communication and computer skills.

• Energetic self-starter.

• Ability to use Microsoft Office and Microsoft Excel; competency to learn how to enter data into database

• Ability to drive own vehicle and have a valid driver’s license

• Ability to lift up to 25 pounds

• Ability to climb stairs

The position will work with a variety of people both inside and outside the organization. This position will represent Catholic Charities in a wide variety of situations that will require tact and diplomacy. The position works primarily in an office environment.
