This role in summary
This position builds the foundation for progression into a Journeyman Tool and Die Maker. In this position employees will use the following types of equipment; grinders, mills, bores, lathes, saws, shears, punches, drills, filers, sanders, drill presses, albor presses, hydraulic presses, polishers, demagnetizers, lifts, hoists, and carriers. Under department supervision or a Journeyman this position maintains, troubleshoots and repairs dies, die components, and tooling used in the production process. Tool Makers often work in production areas outside of the Tool Room to troubleshoot dies and tooling in personnel must comply with safety and work rules for the area they are working in, and follow all required safety practices.

Minimum requirements
Candidate must serve a state-indentured tool and die apprenticeship and must have 1 year of manufacturing experience.
Operator must possess the ability to do basic math up to and including trigonometry and understand basic geometric functions and calculations.
Candidate must be able to leave accurate messages for proper tool documentation and repair.
Candidate must be able to understand and comprehend all tool and fixture language (high school level).
Candidate must have basic machine shop skills; must be able to run all tool room machinery; to interpret all technical drawings and correspondence; and understand modem punch press principles.
+ **Operator must be able to use hands, fingers, wrists, elbows, and shoulders while setting up and running machinery and in the everyday maintenance of tools. All ranges of movement are necessary to complete these tasks.**
+ **Operator must be able to twist 90° side to side frequently.**
+ **Operator must be able to bend occasionally at a 90° angle.**
+ **Operator must be able to see clearly to read measuring and manufacturing tools as needed to perform all tool room activities.**
+ **Operator must have good hand and eye coordination.**
+ **Depth perception is used continuously while working with dies, molds, and machinery.**
+ **Operator must be able to identify cosmetic defects as a standard part of his duties. Operator must clearly identify intricate multi-shape pieces that are used as tool and die components.**
+ **Machines must be continuously monitored to hold tolerances and quality required for our tool building and maintenance.**
+ **Operator must be able to trouble shoot highly complex dies and tools and to interpret complex detail and component drawings.**
What You Need to be Successful
+ Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with co-workers, lead personnel, and supervisors.
+ Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations with whole numbers and decimals; understand geometric functions and perform basic calculations; and perform trigonometry calculations as needed.
+ Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings
+ Ability to understand and comprehend all tool and fixture language (high school level)
+ Strong communication skills
+ Strong troubleshooting
Preferred Qualifications
Successful completion of the following: Blueprint Reading (606-111), Applied Math I & II (804-370; 804-371), and Precision Measuring (623-185) classes.
