Herkimer College is seeking qualified applicants for a full-time, on-site Network Technician.
The Network Technician supports the College's IT infrastructure through the maintenance, monitoring, troubleshooting, and documentation of campus-wide network and systems operations. This position provides hands-on technical support under the supervision of the Network Administrator and works closely with the Assistant Network Administrator, the Director of IT, and a broader IT team to ensure secure and reliable operations.
This role includes responsibility for developing and using scripts and automation tools to simplify recurring tasks, reducing errors, and improving efficiency.
Major responsibilities will include:
+ Assist in the daily operation and maintenance of the College's local and wide area networks, including switches, wireless access points, VPNs, and firewall appliances.
+ Utilize network monitoring tools to track system performance, identify bottlenecks, and troubleshoot issues in real-time.
+ Perform network patching, firmware updates, and endpoint system updates across all campus locations.
+ Support server operations by performing routine checks, applying updates, and assisting with access or configuration tasks in Windows and Linux environments.
+ Perform Active Directory tasks such as user provisioning, password resets, group assignments, and assisting with Group Policy application.
+ Assist with administration of Microsoft 365 tools, including tasks in Entra ID, Exchange Online, Microsoft Defender, and Microsoft Purview under guidance.
+ Develop and maintain automation scripts using PowerShell, Python, and Bash to streamline common processes, enhance system consistency, and support troubleshooting efforts.
+ Monitor and verify system backups; escalate failures and assist with scheduled recovery testing and documentation.
+ Provide physical network support, including cable patching, labeling, port activation, and equipment setup in data closets and server rooms.
+ Maintain and update network and systems diagrams, inventory databases, and related infrastructure documentation.
+ Assist in the support and maintenance of auxiliary systems, including fax lines, credit card machines, VoIP phones, and basic CCTV hardware.
+ Contribute to virtualization environments (e.g., VMware, Hyper-V) by monitoring virtual machines and supporting basic provisioning or resource allocation.
+ Respond to support tickets related to network access, connectivity, system performance, or device configuration, escalating complex issues appropriately.
+ Maintain confidentiality and comply with institutional security policies and best practices.
+ Coordinate network operations with Network Administrator and other Information Technology staff.
+ Assists with the development of network operations and access procedures and policies.
+ Assists with development of bid specifications for procurement of network hardware and software.
+ Assists with research, development, and implementation of new network hardware and software technologies.
+ Perform other duties assigned by the Network Administrator.
Job Requirements:
Required qualifications:
+ Associate degree in Information Technology, Networking, or a related field.
+ At least 2 years of hands-on experience supporting IT infrastructure, Computer networks in a technical role.
+ Solid understanding of networking principles: IP addressing, switching, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, servers' operations, and Cybersecurity.
+ Experience with Windows systems, user management in Active Directory, and endpoint patching.
+ Proficiency in scripting with PowerShell, Python, or Bash, including creating automation for repeatable IT tasks.
+ Familiarity with Microsoft 365 platforms and cloud-based administration tools.
+ Strong documentation, organizational, and troubleshooting skills.
+ Strong oral and writing communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Bachelor's degree in information technology, Networking, or a related field
+ Experience working in higher education.
+ Exposure to virtualization and backup systems.
+ Industry certifications such as CompTIA Network+, Microsoft Fundamentals, Cisco CCNA, Security+, Server+
+ Familiarity with diagramming tools (e.g., Microsoft Visio, Lucidchart) for maintaining infrastructure maps.
Additional Information:
Pre-employment physical, and ability to lift/push/pull, etc. 50 pounds is required.,
Salary range: $52,708 - $79,062 (commensurate with qualifications and experience).
