The Transfusion Safety Officer (TSO) plays an important role in the organization, acting as a liaison between the Transfusion Medicine Services and clinical staff to enhance transfusion safety through education, audits, quality improvement, transfusion event review, and active surveillance of the blood ordering through transfusion process to limit risks and improve patient outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
+ Hemovigilance and blood safety oversight, including maintenance of the CDC Hemovigilance database.
+ Investigates, manages, reports of transfusion reactions, errors, and near misses to providers, hospital leadership and appropriate regulatory agencies.
+ Collaborates with physicians, nursing, and quality programs to ensure clinical policies and procedures are compliant with current accreditation and regulatory requirements.
+ Identifies areas of improvement as indicated by accreditation/regulatory requirements and collaborates with clinical personnel to implement solutions.
+ Supports hospital-wide blood safety, blood management, and blood stewardship by ensuring notification of product recalls/withdrawals, monitoring and reporting on blood utilization and wastage trends, evaluating blood management and stewardship initiatives through statistical review, and participating in working groups and hospital committees related to transfusion medicine.
+ Ensures compliance for inspection by regulatory bodies overseeing hospital enterprise wide transfusion (FDA, AABB and the JC).
Minimum Qualifications:
+ Bachelor’s degree in Nursing OR Physician Assistant OR Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology required
+ Master’s degree preferred
Experience:
+ 5 years working experience in healthcare, nursing, blood management, transfusion medicine, medical laboratory science, or PA experience required
+ Preferred experience in transfusion medicine or patient blood management
+ 1 year of basic technical training in lab pre-analytical techniques preferred
Licensure:
+ Current Massachusetts license as a Registered Nurse required OR
+ Current Massachusetts license as a Physician’s Assistant required OR
+ No license requirement if a Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP)
Certification/Registration Required:
+ No certification requirement if licensed as a Registered Nurse OR
+ National Provider Identifier (NPI) number AND National Convention of Certification of Physician Assistants Certification (PA-C) OR
+ Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP)
