    General Requirements:

    Ability to communicate and work with faculty, medical students, clerkship coordinators, hospital administrators, physician preceptors and college administration. Excellent written and verbal communication. Demonstrates personal initiative and abilities to deal with a rapidly changing environment. Familiarity with Learning Management Systems and reporting is preferred. Other duties as assigned.

    Nature & Purpose of Position/Usual Duties:

    Serves the Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine ( SHSU - COM ) in the Department of Primary Care and Clinical Medicine.

     

    The University is seeking qualified candidates to join SHSU - COM as full-time Clinical Faculty. The position reports to the Chair of Primary Care and Clinical Medicine but will work closely with the Director of Medical Student Affairs and the Associate Dean for Clinical Operations. The University is focused on improving the physician workforce in primary care and other specialties identified as a physician shortage in the State of Texas and has developed an integrated curriculum merging basic science instruction with clinical learning and an osteopathic emphasis. The Clinical Faculty member will be expected to act as a mentor, particularly for students wishing to practice in primary care fields or in rural/community-based medicine.

     

    The role involves providing confidential individual and couples therapy or counseling within the SHSU Physicians Clinic, with priority given to College of Osteopathic Medicine ( COM ) students. The faculty member will also arrange group counseling sessions tailored for SHSU - COM students and serve as a key liaison with the Office of Medical Student Affairs to better understand the unique stressors of the COM curriculum, suggesting options and policies to enhance student well-being. They will compile mental health resources and appropriately triage students who may be hesitant to pursue follow-up care at the clinic. In addition to offering integrated behavioral and psychological support to physicians, students, and residents in the clinic, the faculty member will contribute to teaching trainees. If possible, the faculty member will also serve as an approved supervisor for doctoral therapy students from SHSU . Establishing rapport and trust with the student body is essential to ensure students are aware of the available services and feel comfortable seeking help.

     

    The faculty member should be available on-site for walk-in visits and informal discussions as needed, while also promoting a culture of wellness and supporting students in managing stress and preventing burnout. They will work closely with the Associate Dean for Clinic Operations and the Clinic Director to obtain credentialing and empanelment with insurance companies and complete necessary billing paperwork. Additionally, the faculty member must be prepared to support individuals and classes during especially stressful times and assist with crisis management when necessary.

     

    Please note this position is located in Conroe at the College of Osteopathic Medicine facility.

    Educational Requirements for the Position (Faculty Positions Only):

    The successful candidate will have a terminal degree and license in Texas to provide therapy or counseling and who is eligible to accept assignment by third party payers in the clinic. Faculty positions require a terminal degree which includes (but are not limited to) PhD Psychology, PhD Marriage and Family Therapy, PsyD, PhD Counseling or PhD Counseling Psychology.

    Experience Required for the Position (Faculty Positions Only):

    This position requires clinical skills and well-developed communication skills. A background in medical education is preferred, as is experience in pre-clinical and clinical teaching. Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with experience and training.
