    In this role, the selected candidate will be tasked to perform Nerve Conduction Study (NCS) testing on both common and uncommon nerves. This candidate will be able to recognize clinically significant waveforms while following policy and procedures established by the American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM) and laboratory protocol. The top candidate performs NCSs under the direct supervision of an Electrodiagnostic (EDX) Physician.

    POSITION SUMMARY

    This position performs basic Nerve Conduction Studies (NCSs) in the laboratory under the direction of a Certified Nerve Conduction Technologist (CNCT) or Registered Nerve Conduction Study Technologist (RNCST) and under the direct supervision of an Electrodiagnostic (EDX) Physician. Must adhere to American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM) policies and guidelines.

    CORE FUNCTIONS

    1. Explains the NCS test procedure to the patient to obtain the patient’s cooperation necessary for a complete examination. Checks the patient’s electronic medical record for orders and special needs, with particular attention to patients with pacemakers, defibrillators, and neurotransmitters.

    2. Prepares the patient, applying a variety of surface electrodes as required. Accurately obtains common NCSs. Distinguishes between normal and abnormal results. Describes all abnormal clinical manifestations observed during the test. Recognizes physiological and non-physiological artifacts and takes appropriate steps to eliminate them.

    3. Performs the appropriate calibration procedure on the EDX instrument for standard recordings. Manipulates instrument controls, including filter and sensitivity settings, for optimal recording of electrical responses.

    4. Assists the EDX Physician with the EDX studies as needed by preparing or manipulating the instrument and applying surface recording electrodes.

    5. Keeps equipment clean and in good operating condition. Detects instrument malfunctions and makes minor maintenance adjustments or reports the need for major repairs. Cleans and maintains electrodes.

    6. Gains technical knowledge for equipment and IT trouble shooting, including coordinating with Biomedical Engineering to facilitate EMG machine maintenance.

    7. Works with clinic leadership to establish appropriate par levels for supplies.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge.

     

    This position requires clinical knowledge typically achieved with one year of experience. Must demonstrate effective communication skills, human relations skills, basic mathematical skills, analyze data and solve basic problems.

     

    Must have completed at least 12 months of fulltime (or equivalent) practical training in performing NCSs under the direct supervision of an EDX Physician.

     

    Required to obtain Certified Nerve Conduction Technologist (CNCT) or Registered Nerve Conduction Study Technologist (RNCST) credentials within 3 years.

    Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
