Background

Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee is a leading, non-sectarian, non-profit organization providing emergency relief, protection, rehabilitation assistance , resettlement services, and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. Domestically, our 22 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.

Scope of Role:

Youth Futures is an after-school leadership development program for refugee and immigrant teens. Youth Futures meets once weekly at each school site, with a total of 3 projected high school sites anticipated for the Fall 2025 semester. The Youth Futures Interns will lead after-school program implementation, building meaningful relationships with program participants, and supporting program growth and evolution. It is important to note that this position is UNPAID and primarily IN-PERSON. Applicants should be available to be in-person for at least 2 days a week, totaling approximately 8 in-person hours per week .

In-person availability during program hours on 2 of the following days: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 3 PM – 7 PM. Flexible remote availability for virtual intern cohort meetings and administrative work as well (as decided by team availability).

Learning Objectives:

The After-School Program Intern will …

+ Learn group facilitation and classroom management skills

+ Become proficient in outreach to clients of various language and educational backgrounds

+ Learn how to manage supporting services within the established requirements, to provide the best possible service to vulnerable populations

+ Develop skills in critical thinking, client services, intercultural education, social work, event planning, and program implementation

+ Learn about the IRC locally and globally , and the available services to refugees and ORR-eligible clients in Richmond, Virginia.

Responsibilities:

+ Facilitate leadership development lessons for program participants

+ Assist with intake process, referrals, recruitment, and retention for participation in Youth Futures

+ Support IRC signature programming and other social-emotional learning activities

+ Attend field trips and family events, as available

+ Support student success by encouraging participation in school and extracurricular activities, finding resources as needed and connecting families

+ Conduct accurate program tracking and case notes to ensure program compliance with its goals through required reporting to funders and internal stakeholders

+ Attend Youth Futures team meetings and complete administrative duties, including but not limited to reporting, timesheets, and expense reports

+ Assist IRC Youth Team with other tasks and client coordination, as needed

+ Adhere to IRC policies, particularly those related to confidentiality and client privacy, and practice sensitivity to cultural and personality differences of clients by respecting their beliefs

Qualifications

+ Undergraduate or Graduate level studies in education, social work, international relations, social sciences, or related fields preferred

+ Cultural awareness of and sensitivity to vulnerable populations, and a desire to help refugees and immigrants adjust to life in the U.S.

+ Background in education or experience working with families formally or informally

+ Patience, understanding, flexibility

+ Effective communication skills, especially in a multicultural environment

+ Engaged in learning about the IRC (mission, philosophy, global work, and local efforts) and willing to adhere to IRC volunteer and workplace policies

+ Proficiency in more than one language preferred but not required (especially Dari, Pashto, Arabic, Spanish, and Kinyarwanda)

This position is unpaid and reports to the Youth Futures Coordinator.
