Position Description
TheSchool of Music (https://www.music.txst.edu/) at Texas State University seeks an engaging, creative, collaborative, and dedicated theatrical designer to serve as a non-tenure-track Assistant Professor of Instruction of Opera Theater/Opera Technical Director. Duties begin August 2025.
The successful candidate will be expected to:
+ Ensure high technical standards for all TXST Opera Theater productions.
+ Collaborate with the Director of Opera Theater in developing a vision and production calendar for each opera.
+ Create scenic and lighting designs, construct sets, hang lighting (as needed), and coordinate costumes and props for a minimum of two fully staged opera productions per year.
+ Schedule and run design and production meetings.
+ Oversee production budgets.
+ Communicate and coordinate with operations managers in Evans Auditorium and the Performing
+ Arts Center.
+ Maintain a safe working environment, including proper maintenance and storage of equipment.
+ Train and supervise student workers, as needed.
+ Teach two courses per semester on technical production for opera and/or theater, or other courses according to the candidate’s qualifications and needs of the School of Music.
+ Participate in faculty meetings, committees, and service activities.
+ Other duties assigned by the Director of the School of Music.
Working Conditions:
+ Use of manual dexterity.
+ Climbing stairs and ladders, pushing, pulling, and lifting 50 pounds.
+ Training student workers on equipment and technology, occasionally in elevated locations such as catwalks, grids, and spot booths/towers.
+ Regular daytime office hours and meetings, in addition to night and weekend hours, based on our production schedule.
Required Qualifications
+ Master’s degree in technical direction, theatrical design, or theatrical production; or equivalent professional experience.
+ Record of accomplishment as a technical director, scenic designer, and/or lighting designer, especially for opera, musical theater, or theater.
+ Potential for success in teaching technical production for opera and/or theater at the collegiate level.
+ Experience working with individuals from varied backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications
+ Experience teaching at the university level.
+ Knowledge and understanding of current trends in stagecraft, stage equipment, and proper scenic construction.
+ Background in the purchasing and maintenance of lighting and scenic equipment.
+ Demonstrated communication and organizational skills, and an ability to work collaboratively.
