The mission of the Department of Corrections is to be a public safety resource for Arkansas families by providing professional management solutions and evidence-based rehabilitative initiatives for offenders.
All DOC positions are designated as Safety Sensitive Positions and are subject to random drug testing pursuant to the Secretarial Directive governing Personnel Drug Testing. Medical marijuana usage, as defined in Amendment 93 of the Arkansas Constitution, prohibits Personnel in a Safety-Sensitive Position from the use of medical marijuana even if they are qualifying patient under the amendment and/or hold a registry identification card. Department Personnel are prohibited from the use or possession of a medicinal marijuana card pursuant to this policy and state law.

Job Summary
The Data / Research Specialist is responsible for designing and executing systematic approaches to collect, analyze, and interpret complex datasets. This role serves as a key contributor by transforming raw data into actionable insights that support strategic decision-making. Whether working with quantitative or qualitative data, the specialist ensures data integrity and quality, applies advanced analytical techniques, and presents findings in clear, insightful reports. This classification is ideal for individuals with strong analytical skills, a passion for data-driven problem solving, and a commitment to continuous learning in a constantly evolving field.
Primary Responsibilities
Gather data from multiple primary and secondary sources—from surveys and experiments to publicly available datasets and internal databases. Develop and maintain procedures for data acquisition, cleaning, storage, and retrieval to ensure high data quality and accessibility. Utilize statistical and analytical techniques (using tools such as Python, R, Structured Query Language, or Statistical Product and Service Solutions) to evaluate datasets, identify trends, and generate insights. Conduct hypothesis testing, perform regression analysis, and apply other relevant models to reveal underlying patterns in the data. Consolidate research findings into comprehensive reports, visualizations, dashboards, and presentations for internal teams or external personnel. Translate complex data insights into easily digestible information to support strategic planning and operational enhancements. Verify the accuracy and consistency of data sets by implementing regular audits and validation processes. Troubleshoot data issues and recommend improvements to data collection and processing methodologies. Work closely with cross-functional teams—including marketing, operations, product development, and information technology—to define research objectives and ensure research design aligns with organizational goals. Provide consultative support on data interpretation and optimal strategies for utilizing research findings. Stay informed of emerging data technologies, industry trends, and best practices in data research and analytics. Seek opportunities to optimize data systems and processes, proposing enhancements based on evolving business needs.
Knowledge and Skills
A strong aptitude for identifying patterns, anomalies, and actionable trends in complex datasets. Excellent written and verbal communication skills to articulate technical findings to non-technical personnel effectively. Experience in data storytelling—translating quantitative data into clear and compelling narratives. A proactive mindset with the ability to troubleshoot data discrepancies and develop innovative solutions to research challenges. Familiarity with database systems, data visualization tools, and data management best practices. A willingness to keep current through continuous learning and professional development in emerging data technologies.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Economics, Sociology, Information Systems, or a related field. Practical exposure to analytical tools (e.g., Python, R, Structured Query Language) and data visualization software (e.g., Tableau, Power Business Intelligence) may be required.
