    Overview

    Job Summary:

    Standardized Patients (SP) support Osteopathic Medical Education by playing the role of “patient actors,” who create a realistic scenario from which students can learn.

     

    The Standardized Patient Trainer (SPT), under the direction of the Director collaborates with clinical faculty in creating realistic and actionable standardized patient roles and patient profiles. The SPT will also support recruiting, engaging, developing, and retraining SPs for Osteopathic Medical Education sessions, exams, simulation sessions, and other types of events. The SPT will help develop faculty awareness and comfort in the application of SP and simulation education modalities. The SPT will contribute to broader simulation efforts and showcase a proactive approach to problem-solving. The SPT will further integrate osteopathic medical philosophy and principles into all aspects of SP training and development.

     

    The SPT will facilitate scenarios such as SPs providing a history, having a basic non-invasive physical exam performed upon them, and/or portraying a simulated illness. The SPT will manage costumes and makeup to enhance the simulated effect. The SPT will also coach non-verbal communication skills so SPs can display the emotions, body language, and communication skills they might encounter in a clinical environment. This may include the simulation of sensitive, uncomfortable, and unpleasant physical and emotional symptoms.

     

    The SPT will support Baptist University, College of Osteopathic Medicine events including but not limited to multiple concurrent projects such as formative and summative sessions, lab events, osteopathic manipulative medicine events, staff and faculty development events, etc.

     

    The SPT is a key member of the Baptist University, College of Osteopathic Medicine simulation team.

     

    Under the general direction of the Director of Medical Education Simulation, incumbent is responsible for one shift 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. Incumbent is subject to hours beyond the normal workday.

    Job Responsibilities:

    + Recruit, maintain, and develop a diverse and representative pool of PRN Standardized Patients.

    + Integrates SP education best practices across SP recruitment, SP training/development, scenario development, scenario implementation, and faculty development.

    + Oversees, trains, and provides ongoing feedback to SPs in terms of case portrayal and performance management. Supports quality improvement, quality assurance, and assessment processes.

    + Follow and abide by Baptist Health Sciences University, state health and safety regulations. Identify safety improvements for the SP program including student/staff physical and psychological safety.

    + Develops a database of cases, tools, moulage for use in the SP program. Shares best practices across the Baptist University, College of Osteopathic Medicine and Baptist Health Sciences University.

    Minimum Qualifications

    + Bachelors degree

    + One year of experience in a healthcare training environment.

    + Experience managing concurrent projects

    + Experience handling challenging scenarios (such as emotional situations, difficult diagnoses, etc).

    + Proficient in writing SP scripts

    + Expertise in using SimCapture, Laerdal, and AV systems.

    + Participate in ongoing professional development

    Desired Qualifications

    + Knowledge of osteopathic medical education

    + One year of experience in an osteopathic education environment preferred, with a strong interest in theater, stage productions, costumes, and makeup.

    + Proven experience in teaching and developing SP cases.

    + Background in establishing programs in a new department/medical school.
