    Description

    The part-timePsychiatric Nurse Practitioner(Psych NP) will assist in the provision of psychiatric care for clients of GMHC’s Mental Health and Substance Use Department. The Psych NP will facilitate coordination of seamless behavioral health, medical, support and prevention services for program clients. The Psych NP will also provide support for individuals in needs of Medication Assisted Treatment to help with substance use issues. As a member of a multi-disciplinary treatment team designed to improve overall functioning of clients, the Psych NP will provide individualized care planning to address the continuum of behavioral health and medical care of clients.

     

    Essential Job Functions

    The following duties are mandatory requirements of the job:

    + Complete psychiatric evaluations for clients presenting with acute and non-acute symptomology

    + Formulate diagnoses based on interpretation of psychological, social, and substance use history and diagnostic tests

    + Assess psychiatric needs of clients and refer to appropriate agencies and support services

    + Under supervision of Medical Director, provide medication administration, observation, and ongoing psychotropic and prophylactic medication management

    + Provide MAT Services

    + Symptom + medication management

    + Provide urgent and non-urgent care (routine scheduled care)

    + Participate in multidisciplinary case conferences to enhance patient care using a bio-psychosocial perspective

    + Work collaboratively with staff to ensure an integrated service plan is in place and is supported to address the continuum of behavioral health and medical care

    + Develop, in coordination with Medical Director and Program Management, additional behavioral health referral sources and linkages

    + Provide all required documentation/statistics accurately and in a timely manner

     

    Special Skills and Knowledge

    In addition to the above-listed job responsibilities and educational requirements, the ideal candidate for this position possesses most or all of the following:

    + Prior work with non -profit agencies or work on behalf of LGBTQ+ communities and/or people living with HIV is highly desirable.

    + Experience working with other historically marginalized communities (in a professional or volunteer capacity) is also desirable.

    + Excellent written, verbal, and organizational skills are required

    + Proficiency in computer systems is necessary

    + Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

    + Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary treatment team

    + Trained to handle issues such as domestic violence, trauma, psychoses and interactions among co-occurring disorders, and substance using populations

    + Demonstrated knowledge of and experience working with HIV/AIDS, POC, and LGBTQ-identified adults and community needs

    + Familiarity and ease with harm reduction and recovery-based models of care

    + Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and independently

    + Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred

    Requirements

    Education and Certification

     

    + Master’s Degree in Nursing

    + Licensed to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of New York

    + Must be certified to practice in the subspecialty of Psychiatry

    + At least 2 years’ experience working with mental health and substance use diagnoses.

     

    Technical Skills

    The ideal candidate should have the following technical competencies to effectively manage case documentation, reporting, and client services:

    + Strong documentation and compliance skills, ensuring accurate and timely completion of case notes, treatment plans, and psychiatric evaluations in adherence to HIPAA and OMH regulatory standards.

    + Consistent application of clinical protocols aligned with evidence-based practices and agency policy.

    + Proficiency with electronic health record (EHR) systems for data entry, charting, and reporting.

    + Familiarity with psychiatric medication management and relevant clinical guidelines.

    + Ability to interpret and apply diagnostic tools, including DSM-5 criteria.

    + Confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA, 42 CFR Part 2, and other legal and ethical protections.

     

    Work Environment & Schedule

    This is an in-office/onsite position that includes:

    + Onsite responsibilities such as client appointments, psychiatric evaluations, medication management, administering injections, interdisciplinary collaboration, and participation in clinical team meetings.

    + A consistent in-office presence is required to support high-quality, coordinated care delivery.

    + Flexibility in scheduling may be necessary to meet client needs, including occasional early evening hours.

    + Participation in the annual AIDS Walk New York event is mandatory for all GMHC staff.

     

    Physical Demands

    While carrying out the responsibilities of this role:

    + Occasional movement around the office is required for in-person sessions, meetings, and collaboration.

    + The role involves direct interaction with clients who may be medically or emotionally vulnerable, requiring a high degree of empathy, patience, and emotional resilience in order to provide compassionate and effective support.

    + May occasionally be required to lift or carry files, laptop equipment, or small supplies up to 10 pounds.

    + Must be able to remain calm and grounded during crisis interventions or emotionally charged client interactions.

    + The role involves direct interaction with clients who may be medically or emotionally vulnerable, requiring a high degree of empathy, patience, and emotional resilience in order to provide compassionate and effective support.
