*The University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) School of Medicine is seeking a Nurse Coordinator to coordinate activities of patients being screened for lung cancer.*This position is a registered nurse with cancer-specific clinical expertise who provides individualized assistance to patients, families, and caregivers. The Nurse Coordinator is integral to delivering patient-centered oncology care, ensuring that every individual receives the guidance and support they need to achieve optimal health outcomes. The Nurse Coordinator’s primary goal is to act as the point of contact for patients with cancer who are under the direct care of the specialist(s) and coordinates and expedites care from abnormal imaging through to definitive treatment/interventions and on to survivorship/end of life care issues. This includes screening, diagnosis, treatment, follow-up, and surveillance. Works closely with numerous disciplines in an effort to assure patients avoid missed opportunities in their healthcare. Responsible for the provision of high quality, customer-focused and cost- effective patient care relative to this role. The Nurse Coordinator overcomes barriers within the healthcare system and facilitates timely access to quality care across all phases of the disease continuum, including screening, diagnosis, and treatment. This role encompasses patient advocacy, education, care coordination, and support, ensuring a seamless experience for patients navigating the complexities of screening for lung cancer and possible cancer care. All employees are expected to work primarily physically within the State of Maryland.*/ *Primary Duties:* * Leads the activities of one or more research studies and the nurses engaged in research or clinical trials and the provision of health care to research patients. Serves as a patient advocate throughout the research study or clinical trial by following the clinical courses of patients screened for lung cancer and obtaining results of diagnostic studies, assessing patients for complications, and recording patient data into Epic. * Establish and maintain database files, performs required data extraction and reports on progress of programs, studies, and/or projects. * Complete a comprehensive assessment of individuals referred for pulmonary care services and follows the patient through diagnostic work-up and treatment. * Promote positive relationships by using culturally appropriate shared decision-making and consideration of the varied needs of patients, families and physicians. Serves as an essential link between patients, families, physicians and all other care providers. Provide emotional support, particularly during critical decision-making moments. * Conduct patient/family education concerning tobacco use and cessation. Assists with conducting and coordinating health education for lung cancer and smoking prevention and early detection in conjunction with the Department of Community Outreach. * Support the patient across pulmonary, interventional pulmonology, thoracic surgery, and oncology, acting as a guide, resource, advocate, educator and liaison patients and families. * Track and inform patients about their plan of care to assure they attend the variety of appointments for procedures and physician consults. Assist patients and families to overcome barriers of care as appropriate. * Educate and reinforce education with patients and families on lung disease, biopsy procedures, pathology results and next steps based on the multidisciplinary plan of care. Provide all necessary education and support material to patients/families and engages them in the understanding of cancer care and treatment protocols utilized. * Monitor patient progress and transitions across specialty practices by consulting with providers and other members of the care delivery team as needed. Refer to appropriate physician or service line as needed for complex patient care issues or concerns. * Coordinate and participate in multidisciplinary treatment planning conferences and clinic. Keep all members of the team informed of plan of care and patients progress through the clinic. * Identify and address barriers to care, such as financial, logistical, or psychosocial challenges. * Monitor activities to ensure compliance with all relevant local, federal, and state regulatory and institutional policies. * Performs other related duties as assigned. *Education:*Bachelor’s degree in nursing or another discipline appropriate to position. *Experience:*Five (5) years as a Registered Nurse with at least one (1) year in research specialization. Additional years of research in oncology nursing preferred. Experience in patient or project management preferred. *Certification/Licensure:*Current Maryland license in good standing issued by the Maryland Board of Nursing to practice as a registered nurse or a multistate licensure privilege to practice as a registered nurse in Maryland or appropriate federal district licensure where research is conducted. *Other:*Certification from Association of Clinical Research Professionals or Society of Clinical Research Associates preferred.May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation. Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 undergraduate college credits being equivalent to one year of related experience. In instances where specific education and/or experience is required only directly related education and/or experience may be substituted. *Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities* * Competence in using electronic medical records and maintaining compliance with HIPAA regulations. * Possess knowledge of best practices in oncology and cancer screening, specifically lung cancer. Demonstrate core knowledge base in nursing and expanded clinical knowledge in oncology nursing. * Demonstrate interpersonal skills, appropriate to the age/developmental stage of the patient, family and/or visitor, adults and the elderly. * Proficiency in patient care coordination and multidisciplinary team collaboration. * Knowledge of specialty-specific best practices and the ability to address diverse patient populations. * Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills. * Ability to perform duties in compliance with all requirements, regulations, and laws. * Ability to learn how to effectively use technology while maintaining high standards with the work being performed and maintain awareness with trends and influences. * Ability to assume personal responsibility for all outcomes; make effective and timely decisions. * Ability to maintain productivity and use knowledge strategies to increase knowledge base.
