    Section 64 - Dams, Levees, & Reservoir Development

    About this Position:

    The duties of this position in the Dam Safety & Water Resources Section (64-066), involves the technical inspection of and preparation of reports of dams and levees. The incumbent of this position must attend the specialized training, in addition to the required structured training courses, to perform the inspections. Direct supervision is received from an Engineer 6. While in official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Service Laws, rules, and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals, and directives.

     

    This position with the DOTD Levee Safety Program requires travel throughout the non-coastal portions of the state to conduct levee inspections.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Possession of a high school diploma or GED plus three years of sub-professional engineering experience.

    SUBSTITUTIONS:

    Six months of experience in sub-professional engineering, heavy mobile equipment operation, or mobile equipment maintenance will substitute for the high school diploma or GED.

     

    College training will substitute for the required experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience provided that six semester hours of each thirty are in one of these specialized fields: architecture, cartography, chemistry, construction management, construction technology, drafting, engineering, engineering graphics, engineering technology, geography, geology, industrial technology, landscape architecture, math, or physics.All specialized course work credited must be in the same specialized field. A combination of course work from different fields will not be accepted.

     

    Full-time training in sub-professional engineering from a trade school or technical institute will substitute for the required experience on a month-for-month basis for a maximum of one year of experience.

     

    Completion of a two year course of study in a sub-professional engineering curriculum from a trade school or technical institute will substitute for two years of the required experience.

     

    A baccalaureate degree in engineering, engineering technology, construction management or construction technology will substitute for all of the required experience.

     

    Possession of an engineer intern certificate will substitute for all of the required experience.

     

    NOTE: Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.

    Job Duties and Other Information

     

    50% Conducts technical inspections of levees, by himself or in joint effort with the Section and District Engineering staff. The incumbent should be able to detect and interpret any deficiencies on the levees to determine if they constitute a possible threat to the structure and the general public. Reviews and helps develop levee inspection reports. Assists the Levee Safety Engineer in implementing levee safety activities.

     

    15% Provides technical support and assistance to levee district inspection personnel in the proper conduct of field investigations of flood protection system infrastructure.

     

    15% Conducts technical inspections of dams and reservoirs, by himself or in joint effort with the Section and District Engineering staff. The incumbent should be able to detect and interpret any deficiencies on the dam to determine if they constitute a possible threat to the structure and the general public. Reviews monthly darn maintenance reports submitted by the district offices and updates the darn safety database. Assists the Dam Safety Engineer in implementing dam safety activities.

     

    10% Provides water resources information to other agencies, contractors, and the general public searches and retrieves Public Works historical files for DOTD district engineers, DOTD legal section and the general public. Provides public information pertaining to flooding of a location in the state, to facilitate the dissemination of data prepared and stored by DOTD.

     

    5% Reviews requests for financial participation (invoices, requests for reimbursement, etc) and supporting documentation. Prepares Standard State Invoice and transmits to Accounting with all required documents to remit payment.

     

    5% May be required to perform other duties as assigned, including but not limited to emergency/disaster support activities.

    Position-Specific Details:

    This position may be filled as either a probational appointment (open to all qualified applicants); a promotion (open to all statewide classified and Agency-wide permanent status employees); or by detail to special duty.

     

    This position has a Premium Pay of $1.00 per hour of every hour worked.
