Summary About the Position: As a marine carpenter, you will perform highly skilled carpentry work on buildings and engineering floating and land plant, including warehouse, quarterboats, shop, towboats, dredges, barges, trucks, trailers and various types of smaller auxiliary structures and equipment. -The duty location will be wherever the Mat Sinking Unit is located. -This position is a Permanent, Full-Time, Seasonal Appointment. Responsibilities Plans and lays out assigned work in conformance with furnished sketches, drawings, blueprints, and own knowledge of construction practices or needed repairs. Works from complex instructions, drawings, sketches, blueprints and own knowledge of construction methods, techniques, and building codes. Measures, cuts, and fits materials to proper dimensions, lengths and form, utilizing skill in making intricate fittings and fabricating needed items, such as shelves, cabinets, storage bins, bookcases, and similar items. Fabricate and/install various types of construction materials used in various building projects. Work involves the use of various trade and power tools. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Marine Carpenter without more than normal supervision. Duties include: Measuring and cutting materials to the correct length and dimension; constructing, installing, repairing, or modifying: wood, composite, and/or wood substitute items; work from sketches, work orders, basic blueprints, and instructions; knowledge of shop mathematics. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading) Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. Knowledge of Materials Measurement and Layout Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Physical Effort: Considerable standing, stooping, and bending is required by the work. Climbing and working from ladders and scaffolds in stretched, cramped, or awkward positions is occasionally necessary. Using a hammer and other hand tools necessitates considerable arm and hand movement and dexterity. Items weighing up to 50 pounds are lifted and carried. Items over 50 pounds are infrequently carried or others assist in movement. Working Conditions: Work is done in the shop area and outside. Incumbent is subjected to cuts from hand and power tools and danger from flying chips and splinters. Exposure to sawdust in the air is frequent. Outside work is subject to various weather patterns such as cold, dust, mud, dampness, and heat. Work on roofs and ladders is required. Shop work is in a well heated and cooled and ventilated building. Education Additional Information Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. One year trial/probationary period may be required. Appointment is subject to the completion of a favorable suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a background investigation. Direct deposit of pay is required. This is a(n) 29 Career Field position. Selection is subject to restrictions resulting from Department of Defense referral system for displaced employees.
