Summary This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol (AOC), Office of the Chief of Operations, Superintendent House Office Buildings, Assistant Superintendent Tenant Services Division, Carpentry Branch. The incumbent is the Wood Crafter (CNC) Supervisor. In addition to the supervisory responsibilities, the incumbent provides overall coordination of the individual craft and laboring efforts related to the building. Responsibilities Performs administrative and technical supervisory functions for subordinates. Assigns duties and evaluates performance. Manages the organizational unit’s budget and workload. Develops performance requirements for subordinates and ensures a mutual understanding of the performance standards. Resolves complaints and grievances. Provides leadership to ensure support for equal employment opportunity (EEO) goals and requirements. Utilizes computer-assisted facilities management system (TMA), AOC’s specialized maintenance management software, to ensure that preventive maintenance schedules are followed and that work orders are assigned in a timely manner. Utilizes various office automation software for maintaining records such as price estimates, logbooks, status reports and inventory. Utilizes acquisition and material management procedures to order supplies, equipment and materials. The incumbent is responsible for utilizing a thorough knowledge of and compliance with applicable AOC and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) safety rules and regulations to ensure that work progresses in a safe manner and to initiate or take corrective action on unsafe conditions in managed areas. The incumbent uses, creates designs and fabricates high-grade cabinetry, furniture, woodwork and signs via various CNC machinery. The New Hermes and Gravograph 8000 laser engraving machines and devices utilize CNC capabilities to produce, logos, signage and symbols, utilizing discs, flash-drives and internet images. The Techno CNC utilizes CNC capabilities to produce cabinetry, furniture and woodwork. Specialized software includes Gravostyle 7 for the signage machine and EnRoute for the router. In some instances, the Wood Crafter may download from specialized WEB sites, such as Google SketchUp and generates detailed plans, specifications and schematics to manufacture unique furniture for Congressional Members. The computer navigation to upload specifications and manufacture the furniture is more complex than site based digital controlled equipment or stand-alone tools and warrants classification to WG-11 for Wood Crafters assigned these responsibilities on a regular and recurring basis. The incumbent uses a wide knowledge of wood supplies and precision woodworking methods and their alternatives to plan and lay out their work from specifications, blueprints, rough sketches and verbal instructions, taking into consideration the tooling, durability, cost, strength and appearance characteristics of a variety of softwoods, hardwoods, plywood, veneers and wood substitutes for projects. The incumbent selects, cuts, turns, shapes, joins, bonds, fits, assembles and decorates wooden materials and parts, using the full range of hand and power woodworking tools, machines and techniques to create superior and structurally reliable woodwork which requires exact fitting and close weight, pressure and size tolerances to construct specialty furniture. Woodwork examples include cabinetry, furniture, bookcases, countertops, wainscot paneling, rostrums, podiums and reception counters. Using a thorough knowledge of wood supplies and precision woodworking methods and their alternatives, plans and lays out work from specifications, blueprints, rough sketches and verbal instructions, taking into consideration the tooling, durability, cost, strength and appearance characteristics of a variety of softwoods, hardwoods, plywood, veneers and wood substitutes. This includes providing advice and guidance to workers engaged in wood crafting work (e.g., CNC, making and repairing high-grade wooden items such as fine cabinetry and furniture).
