*Description*
*Job Summary:*
The trauma registry is the driver of performance measures, research, initiatives for injury prevention, legislative efforts, funding, resource allocation, and benchmarking. Under the direction of the Trauma Medical Director and Trauma Program Manager, the trauma registry professional is responsible for the efficient operations of the trauma registry, including patient identification, data collection/abstraction, data submissions, and report generation.
*Major Responsibilities: *
* Identifies injured patients meeting the National Trauma Data Standards and hospital inclusion criteria
* Provides high quality data entry by abstraction of hospital specific, state, and National Trauma Data Band elements from the EMR and other sources in real time and retrospectively
* Coding mechanisms of injury, procedures, and diagnoses using ICD10-CM, ICD10-PCS, and AIS15
* Interacts with physicians, nurses, and other members of the trauma team
* Recognizes patterns of mechanism and injury to contribute to opportunities for injury prevention and community safety
* Recognizes complications and deviations from the standard of care to contribute to performance improvement efforts
* Keeps registry current as defined by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) at a minimum of 80% complete with 60 days of patient discharge
* Participates in quality assurance, data validation, and performance improvement activities to ensure accuracy of data collection
* Timely data submissions to the State of CT, National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB), and ACS Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP)
* Understands mapping concepts and validates mapping of registry software for data submissions
* Resolves routing coding issues/problems and appropriately seeks assistance from Trauma Program leadership and/or the trauma registry vendor when appropriate
* Creates and runs registry reports for injury prevention, performance improvement, reverification visits, and research
* Reports data in formats such as Excel and/or Power Point for both internal and external presentations (includes statistical, clinical, and research data)
* Maintains confidentiality of patient information per HIPAA requirements

* *Job Requirements:*
*Education:*
* Minimum 2 years of college
* Completion of a trauma registry course that includes all of the following content within 1 year of hire:
* Abstraction
* Data management
* Reports/report analysis
* Data validation
* HIPAA
* Completion of an ICD-10 course within 1 year of hire or an ICD-10 refresher course every 5 years
* Participate in and pass the AAAM’s Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) course within 1 year of hire
* Accrual of at least 24 hours of trauma related CE during the verification cycle
*Work Experience: *
Minimum: One year coding experience OR previous experience working with trauma registry databases and handling medical information in a healthcare setting
*Licenses & Certifications:*
Preferred: Certified Abbreviated Injury Scale Specialist (CAISS)
Certified Specialist in Trauma Registries (CSTR)
*Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:*
* Knowledge and ability to use computers, including word processing, spread sheets, graphics, e-mail, data base management, and report writers
* Extensive knowledge of registry maintenance and related regulations
* Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
* Knowledge of ICD-10 and AIS 15 coding
* Knowledge of data abstraction techniques
* Ability to work independently on assigned projects and to recommend improvement to the process of collecting, maintaining, and reporting patient information
* Ability to establish productive relationships with a wide variety of health care professionals
